GIRARD -- Police have arrested one man suspected of assisting in a robbery at McQuaid's Gas Station on State Street earlier in the week, but one suspect is still at large.
Aaron Sponaugle, 23, of West Liberty Street, was arrested after officers converged on his home Thursday. Police found syringes, a shoe lace and a spoon sitting on a living room table after going into the apartment, police reports said.
Police are still looking for Duke Wagner, 26, of Robbins Avenue. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
According to police reports, a McQuaid's clerk told officers she was preparing to mop floors in the gas station Wednesday afternoon when she heard the door buzzer and saw a man coming toward her with what looked to be a shirt or jacket sleeve over his face.
The man demanded money, the clerk told him there was no money, and he made a second demand for money, reports state. The clerk then tried to enter an office and close the door, but the man pushed his way into the office still demanding money.
Lighter as weapon
Reports state the man had a lighter that he kept holding up to the clerk's face. The man took money from the office and left the store.
Witnesses told police there were two men involved in the robbery. The first man waited outside the store serving as a lookout while the second man committed the robbery, reports said.
Police believe Sponaugle served as the lookout during the robbery. Wagner is believed to have gone into the store. Reports say several witnesses identified Wagner to police, including a description of the clothes worn during the robbery, before seeing any photographs of either man.
Witnesses told police the two men are heavily involved in drugs. Reports said the men may have wanted the money to buy more drugs.
