Medical Alliance names 'Gem of Year'



The organization paid tribute to two members who have served with distinction.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Stephanie Hunter was honored as the "Gem of the Year" for her distinctive service to the Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance and the community during a joint meeting of the alliance and the Mahoning County Medical Society on March 24 at the Youngstown Club.
The organization also presented the "Golden Gem of the Year" award to Joyce Bernstine in recognition of her 30 years of active service to the alliance.
About Hunter
Born in Swarthmore, Pa., Hunter graduated from Brown University and received her master's degree in hospital administration from Duke University.
She is a five-year member of the alliance and is its president-elect. She is president of Youngstown Symphony Guild and is also a member of the YWCA Board of Directors, Women's Art Committee, Junior League of Youngstown, St. Faith's Altar Guild, Canfield PTA, Youngstown Gymnastic Boosters and Canfield Swim and Dive Boosters.
She was the YWCA Woman of the Year in 2005 and is chairwoman of Bright Futures at the YW. She was a youth group leader at St. John Church, where she is a regular volunteer at the church's soup kitchen.
Hunter, a health-care consultant from 1982-1997, is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, a coordinator of the Neighborhood Fund Drive, and a member of American Heart Association and St. Elizabeth Red Dress Committee.
Hunter and her husband, Dr. Tim Hunter, live in Canfield with their sons, James and Nicholas.
The Alliance also acknowledged Doctor's Day, which took place March 31.
