UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH
Michael Shesko, son of Ron and Karen Shesko of Lake Milton, has been inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, a national college honor society for freshmen. Members are called on to tutor fellow students and be active in community service. Shesko is a 2005 graduate of Ursuline High School.
MOREHEAD STATE UNIVERSITY, MOREHEAD, KY.
Andrea Lucente of Youngstown, a senior at Morehead, is a member of the university's women's bowling team that will participate in the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships April 26-29 in Rockford, Ill. Her team finished in the top four at a sectional qualifier event in March to advance to the championships.
BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY
Danielle D. Champney, daughter of Ed and Paulette Champney of New Middletown, has been inducted into the University's chapter of Mortar Board, a national senior honor society. Danielle, a Springfield Local graduate, is also being inducted into the Kappa Mu Epsilon National Mathematics Honor Society. She is an applied math and psychology major, is an active community volunteer for both the Bowling Green Alumni Laureate program and University's Honors Program.
COLLEGE OF WOOSTER, WOOSTER, OHIO
Sophomore Raymond Gaines, a graduate of Joseph Badger High School, has been awarded the J. Howard Morris and Josephine L. Morris Volunteer Service Award, presented to a student who is judged to have excelled in volunteer service through the Wooster Volunteer Network. The recipient earns the right to direct the prize to the charity of his or her choice and is the college's nominee for the national Howard Swearer Student Humanitarian Award.
Adam Hanley, a graduate of Girard High School and a senior mathematics major, has been presented with the Endowed Faculty Scholarship and the Elizabeth Sidwell Wagner Prize in Mathematics and Computer Science, awarded to the senior who showed, during the junior year, the greatest aptitude, and, in the opinion of a jury, seems most likely to succeed in mathematics or computer science.
Stefanie Zifchak, a graduate of Girard High School and a junior religious studies major, received the Maud Knight Prize in Religion, awarded to a junior who plans to pursue a vocation in religion and who has excelled in academic studies, and the Ralph A. Young Scholarship, awarded each year to a junior or senior religious studies major, who, in addition to outstanding academic work, has demonstrated involvement in co-curricular activities.
LAFAYETTE COLLEGE, EASTON, PA.
Senior Kari Mirkin of Youngstown, a graduate of Liberty High School, is researching modern German perspectives on the end of WWII and has been accepted to present her research at the 20th annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research in April. A double major in German and history, she studied documents in both English and German as part of her honors thesis research into contemporary German perspectives on the conclusion of World War II. This project is a combination of linguistic, cultural and historical studies. She was recently inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, America's oldest and most distinguished honors organization. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, German Club, Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers. She is the daughter of Alan and Lori Mirkin.
ASHLAND UNIVERSITY, ASHLAND, OHIO
Michael Hartz, son of Gregory and Teresita Hartz of Youngstown, is a DJ for the WRDL-FM radio station at the university. He is an electronic media production major.
