Post office extends hours for tax filers

YOUNGSTOWN -- The city's main post office at 99 S. Walnut St. is among Northeast Ohio District U.S. Post Offices that will be open until midnight Monday to help taxpayers postmark and mail their federal tax returns by the midnight deadline.
Postal officials recommend that tax filers who mail their returns check their local post office or read the posted times on the collection box to make sure any tax returns deposited will be collected and postmarked before the deadline.
Any letters or packages weighing more than one pound must be handed to a postal employee in a post office to ensure proper postage, they said.
According to the Internal Revenue Service Web site, www.irs.gov, taxpayers in most of the country have until April 17 to file and pay, because the regular deadline date of April 15 falls on a Saturday.
IRS officials also said individual and business taxpayers in the parishes and counties most severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina have until Aug. 28.
