"California and the American Dream" (10 p.m., PBS): A new documentary series that attempts to explore the dynamics of "culture, community and identity" in one of the world's most diverse regions. Tonight's opener focuses on the evolution of, and the conflicts associated with, Indian gaming.
"Freedom Summer" (9 p.m., The History Channel): Recounts the national attention pointed at Mississippi after the (June 21, 1964, killing of three civil rights workers (two white and one black) by the Ku Klux Klan, an atrocity that helped spur Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
"Shays' Rebellion: America's First Civil War" (10 p.m., The History Channel): The violent Jan. 25, 1787, protest against debt collection and taxation practices prompted George Washington to come out of retirement to help strengthen the fragile new nation.
