Champion rolls to 7-1 win behind Popadak
Her grand slam in the first inning led the Flashes past Newton Falls.
CHAMPION -- Senior Cara Popadak hit a grand slam in the first inning and finished with four RBIs as Champion High defeated Newton Falls, 7-1, in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game Wednesday.
Also for the Golden Flashes (8-2, 4-0 TAC), Brittany Skeels tripled and had two RBIs, while winning pitcher Kasey Karr (3-1) had nine strikeouts and three walks in a four-hitter.
Two of those four hits were by Casee Piquet. Newton Falls is 6-4, 3-4.
Liberty 7, Girard 3
LIBERTY -- Brianna Palumbo pitched a six-hitter with four strikeouts while Michelle Dykes had three singles and two RBIs to lead Liberty (2-5, 2-4 TAC). Megan Kay had two singles while Kacey Kurtz had three singles for Liberty.
For Girard (3-8, 1-3), Hillary Patterson and Nikki Petrarca each had two singles.
Lakeview 11, Hubbard 0
HUBBARD -- Lakeview produced a host of hitters. Lauren Whetzel had two doubles and three RBIs and Brittney Bucco a double, single and three RBIs as part of the Bulldogs' (10-1, 4-1 TAC) 12-hit attack.
Michelle Antone had a double, two singles and two RBIs and Chelsea Butler a two-run homer to bolster Lakeview, while Jen Baker had two singles and one RBI and Amy Downs added two singles.
Starting pitcher Kailynn Cerny (7-0) and fifth-inning reliever Abbey Bensing combined to pitch a six-hitter. Cerny had seven strikeouts.
For Hubbard (6-3, 3-2), Jessica Lunt had two singles.
Lowellville 13, Jackson-Milton 5
LOWELLVILLE -- Junior Carla Blinsky had two doubles while Jacque Schrader, also a junior, had a single and double for Lowellville (7-2, 2-2 Inter-County League). Blinsky (6-2) was also the winning pitcher. Carie Fiol had a single and double while pitcher Krista Kiraly (6-6) struck out eight for Jackson-Milton (7-7, 3-3).
McDonald 12, South Range 7
McDONALD -- McDonald pitcher Lauren Walls improved to 4-3 and added three hits and five RBIs at the plate to lead the Blue Devils (5-4, 1-2) in an ICL game.
Kayla Puntel added three hits and two RBIs and Tomisa Sangregorio had two RBIs.
Megan Beachley had a solo homer while Autumn Carter had three singles and two RBIs and Lynn O'Connell had two RBIs for South Range (0-6-1, 0-4).
Western Reserve 5, Sebring 0
SEBRING -- Stevie Banks pitched a two-hit shutout as Western Reserve (8-3, 5-1 ICL) topped Sebring.
McKenzie Mowery and Oliva Myers each had three hits for the Blue Devils, while Elizabeth Srock and Kelly Sanders each added a pair.
Mathews 14, Bloomfield 0
NORTH BLOOMFIELD -- Freshman Alyssa DeJean (1-2) recorded her first varsity victory by pitching a five-hitter with seven strikeouts over five innings.
DeJean allowed just one walk for Mathews (7-3, 3-1) in the Northeastern Athletic Conference game. Senior Rachel Woolf had four doubles, while juniors Caitlyn Youngs and Amber Jarvis had two hits apiece.
