YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State football coaching staff will hosts its annual Bob Dove Free Spring Coaches Clinic on April 19 at Stambaugh Stadium.
Area football coaches are invited to attend the Penguins' practice at 3 p.m. and stay the remainder of the day and evening for individual or group discussions with the YSU staff.
Film study of drills, practices and games will be offered during the evening session at 6:30 p.m. A dinner will be available at 5:30 p.m. for coaches in attendance at a charge of $5. Pre-registration is required for those who are having dinner by calling YSU assistant coach Mike Kolakowski at (330) 941-3478.
Men's golf
DAYTON -- YSU used two top-five individual performances to finish in third place at the Wright State/Norm Bullock Collegiate Classic which concluded Monday.
Freshman Ryan Stocke finished third with a three-round total of 220 while senior Josh Zarlenga came in fourth with a 221. The Penguins had a three-round total of 909 finishing behind Morehead State (898) and Cleveland State (904).
Stocke had rounds of 72, 72 and 76 to finish with his 220. Eastern Illinois' Dustin Sloat won the event with a 218 while Dayton's Rob Chappell was in second with a 219.
Zarlenga had his best performance of the season with rounds of 74, 74 and 73. Junior Jim Powers placed 34th with a 235 (81-76-78), senior Nate Komsa (79-77-80) and Kyle Romig (82-75-79) tied for 37th with 236s. Sophomore Ryan McGraw competed as an individual and finished 54th with a 241 (79-80-82).
Women's golf
WINNETKA, Ill. -- Sophomore Adrianna DiLonardo took home medalist honors and sophomore Brittany Jones came in second place as the Youngstown State women's golf team won the five-school Loyola Rambler Invitational which was held on Monday and Tuesday at the Winnetka Golf Club. DiLonardo finished four strokes ahead of Jones while freshman Amanda Brindley contributed to the effort with a sixth-place finish. YSU carded a 650 for the 36-hole event with scores of 324 and 326 to earn the victory.
The Penguins were able to hold off a second-day charge by the host Ramblers and win by three shots. After the first round, YSU was in nine shots in front of Loyola. IPFW was third with a 678, Cleveland St. was fourth with a 694 and Chicago St. rounded out the field with a 730. DiLonardo had rounds of 78 and 76 to finish the tournament with a 154. Jones was right behind in second place firing rounds of 80 and 78 posting a mark of 158. Brindley tied for sixth with rounds of 82-83-165.
Other finishers for the Penguins were sophomore Felicia Ciotola finished 15th with a 173 after rounds of 84 and 89 and freshman Mollie Boney who was 23rd with rounds of 96 and 94 to finish with a 190.
The tournament victory for the Penguins was their first since winning the Horizon League Championship in 2003.
YSU will look to carry the momentum from the Rambler Invitational into the Toledo Rocket Spring Classic on April 17 and 18.
Tri-T meeting
POLAND -- Tri-T baseball will hold a meeting on April 19 at 8 p.m. at the Poland Community Baseball Building on Sheridan Road. All Pony League managers must attend to receive their schedules and other material.
Oldfield honored
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel freshman left-fielder Ryan Oldfield was named Presidents' Athletic Conference hitter of the week. Oldfield reached base in his first 11 consecutive plate appearances in the Tomcats' three-game sweep of Westminster College. Oldfield hit .500 with four RBIs and three runs scored in the series. In 19 games, he's hitting .340 with 17 RBIs and seven doubles.
Thistledownopen on Friday
NORTH RANDALL -- The 2006 season of live thoroughbred racing returns to Thistledown Race Track Friday. Post time is 1:05 p.m. This year, Thistledown will conduct 156 days of live racing, 31 less days than prior years, which has led to a 20-percent purse increase in maiden, claiming and allowance conditions. Live race days will be Thursday through Monday. Ohio's richest racing event, the $350,000 (G2) Ohio Derby, will be contested at thistledown July 15. The Ohio Derby has produced many Stakes champions including Skip away, (1996 Ohio Derby champion, who went on to become Horse of the Year in 1998.
