PREP BASEBALL Niles rallies past 'Cats, 6-3, for ninth triumph
The Red Dragons now are 3-0 in the Metro Athletic Conference.
STRUTHERS -- Niles McKinley High scored four runs in the seventh to rally from behind to beat Struthers, 6-3, in a Metro Athletic Conference baseball game Monday at Cene Park.
The Red Dragons (9-1, 3-0 MAC) pounded out 11 hits including three by Anthony Roberts, two of which were doubles, while Sean Cleary had a three-run double in the seventh.
Matt Vince and Joe Razzano also had two hits for Niles.
Struthers (2-7, 1-2 MAC) was led by Mike Barone and Mike Galletta with two hits each.
Howland 5, Campbell 1
HOWLAND -- Anthony Mann fired a four-hitter while Tony Pozega slammed a three-run home to lead Howland.
Mike Johnson had a double, single and two RBIs for Howland.
Jim Bigley had two singles and one RBI for Campbell (1-5).
Poland 10, Salem 0
SALEM -- Jim Pasquine went three-for-three with a three run homer and drove in seven runs to lead Poland to an easy win over Salem.
Lou Coppola tossed a five-inning, two-hit shutout for the Bulldogs (3-2, 2-1 MAC). Trent Vallinger added two hits for Poland.
Ben Miller had both hits for the Quakers (4-3, 1-3 MAC).
Canfield 19, East Liverpool 0
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Joe Rosko hadn't seen much action on the field because of a commitment to the school play, but the senior made up for his lack of time on the field with a stunning performance in Canfield's sixth game.
Against East Liverpool, in his first start, the left-hander officially faced 14 batters and struck out 13 in a five-inning no-hitter. He also issued five walker. One batter attempted a bunt with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
At the plate, Rosko had a grand slam and double and Rosko finished with four RBIs for Canfield (5-1, 2-0).
Other players with two hits were: Drew Turocy (3 RBIs), Brett Grabman (3 RBIs), Dan Moran (2 RBIs), Kyle Banna (2 RBIs) and Joe Fox. C.J. Morris also tripled.
Lakeview 8, Girard 1
CORTLAND -- Josh Lawrence pitched a four-hitter without any walks and one strikeout while Mark Novotny had a double and single and drove in four runs to lead Lakeview (4-6, 2-1 TAC).
Dave DeJacimo had two RBIs while Justin Williams had a double, two singles and scored three runs to also lead Lakeview. For Girard (5-4, 1-2 TAC), Brett Dutton had the only RBI while Brett Cubellis had two singles.
Hubbard 8, Brookfield 2
HUBBARD -- Steve Zubyk pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts for Hubbard (3-7, 1-2 TAC).
Ed Palestro had two singles, one RBI and scored two runs while Corey Hitt had a double, single and one RB I to also pace Hubbard.
Champion 2, Liberty 1
LIBERTY -- A pitchers' duel was decided by two home runs.
Matt Popodak hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning for the Golden Flashes, and Liberty's Mark Wooten hit a solo bomb in the second.
Caleb Pagley pitched four innings, allowing two hits, to earn the win. Alex Freer and Mark Jackson finished for Champion. Phil Bessoiu pitched a complete game for Liberty.
Ravenna 7, Southeast 3
RAVENNA -- The Ravens pulled away from a close game when they scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to go ahead 6-3.
Corey Tilden (2-0) worked a complete game to pick up the win.
Joe Knopick of the Pirates (1-2) allowed nine hits.
Leetonia 8, Southern 0
LEETONIA -- Ryan Gruszecki worked a complete game with 11 strikeouts, pitching to only three batters over the limit in the Tri-County League game. Ryan Thompson and Alex Perkins each hit a pair of singles and scored twice for the Bears who won for the second straight time.
Crestview 7, Lisbon 3
LISBON -- Craig Schmidt and sixth-inning reliever Corey Hill combined to pitch a five-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead Crestview (3-3, 2-3 TCL). Schmidt had seven of the strikeouts. Losing pitcher Eric Cosma had 11 strikeouts. Greg Brown had a double, single and three RBIs while Eric Whittenberger added two singles and one RBI to key Crestview's attack, while Jordan Reynolds rapped a triple and single.
Mathews 21, Lordstown 8
VIENNA -- The Mustangs scored 10 runs in the fourth inning to put the Northeastern Athletic Conference game in the books. Cory Fiest and Kyle Davis had two hits each for Mathews (2-5, 2-1 NAC), including doubles. Phil Ciprian, Tarin Brown, Ben Mackall and John Scudier all singled twice. Mackall was also the winning pitcher.
