HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL Harding beats Mooney 6-1 in conference opener
Warren JFK pulled out a 2-1 win over Ursuline in another SVC contest.
STRUTHERS -- Tom Popadak struck out 11 in six innings, and Barry Adkins hit a two-run double as Warren Harding won its Steel Valley Conference opener, 6-1 over Mooney, Monday at Cene Park.
Caullan Owens went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Raiders (8-2, 1-0 SVC). DeAndre Ware also hit a double.
Popadak (2-0) and Owens combined on a one-hitter.
For Mooney (4-7, 1-2), Tony Brunetti singled and scored in the fourth inning.
Warren JFK 2, Ursuline 1
WARREN -- The Eagles (4-3, 1-1 SVC) scored the winning run in the fourth inning as Brian Guarnieri, who had two hits, doubled and scored on a single by Dominic Lapolla.
Pat Holcomb hit a double and single and Dave Patrick a pair of singles for the Irish (6-2, 2-1).
Chaney 12, Wilson 11
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Cowboys (1-7) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to get past the Redmen (3-3).
Joe Morales singled and Dustin Guyer doubled. Cory Tascik singled both home and he scored on an error for the deciding run.
Morales had three single and scored three times. Tascik had two singles and drove in four runs.
Lowellville 10, Mineral Ridge 6
MINERAL RIDGE -- John Calderon, a junior, gave up three hits over six innings for the Rockets (5-2, 2-1 Inter-County League).
In relief, Dan Lisko pitched 1/3 inning and John Wilaj threw the final 2/3.
Ryan Gruber, a junior, had three hits and two RBIs, sophomore Vince Travaline had two hits and four RBIs and sophomore Jim Sudon had two hits for the Rockets.
McDonald 11, Jackson-Milton 0
NORTH JACKSON -- Steven Hughes (2-1) threw a one-hitter over five innings and collected three hits, including a double, for the Blue Devils (4-4, 2-1).
Corey Vukovic, Paul Logar and Frank Pezzano also doubled for McDonald.
Western Reserve 7, South Range 6
BERLIN CENTER -- Nick Lude doubled home two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Western Reserve (5-4, 3-1 ICL) the victory.
Dave Drevna picked up the victory in relief and also had an RBI. John Porterfield, Dave Snowden and Tom Burton all had infield singles in the seventh before Lude's double.
Joss Less, Steve Bensinger, Tom DeChellis and Chris Gause all had two hits for the Raiders.
Springfield 4, Sebring 1
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The Tigers (8-1) scored all their runs in the first three innings. Jeremy Savaet (4-0) scattered eight hits, with seven strikeouts to remain unbeaten.
John Houser of the Tigers hit a two-run double in the third inning.
Mike Weekly hit two singles and drove in Sebring's (3-3) only run in the seventh inning.
