Mill Creek kite festival
CANFIELD -- Mill Creek MetroParks will celebrate the 300th anniversary of Ben Franklin's birth on April 22, with a kite festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the MetroParks Farm across from Canfield Fairgrounds.
Organizers said members of the Ohio Society for the Elevation of Kites and Fly Pittsburgh will display their collections and flying skills. Members will also judge games and contests for the public and share their knowledge with visitors.
The contests will offer separate divisions for handcrafted and manufactured kites. There will be a category for sport flying and one for handcrafted kites of the style used by Franklin in his famous kite-flying electricity experiments.
State parks honored
LAKE MILTON -- Lake Milton State Park is among Ohio parks to receive honorable mention from Ohio Department of Natural Resources officials lauding state park volunteers' efforts. ODNR chose Portage County's West Branch State Park as its Volunteer Park of the Year for its volunteers' being well-organized and using a productive team approach. Volunteers logged 10,029 hours.
In recent years, West Branch has taken on a whole new appearance, including a new campground, and its volunteers have played a large role in keeping the park beautiful, ODNR officials said. Officials said some 6,000 volunteers worked in Ohio state parks, contributing some 300,000 hours of service.
