Late-game drama drives Springfield
Harding's Stephen Drake and Lowellville's Rachel Mariotti earned track MVPs.
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- With the score tied in the bottom of the seventh inning, John Mrosko reached on an error, was bunted to second base and came home when a ground ball was thrown away, leading Springfield High to a 6-5 victory over Liberty Saturday in a non-conference baseball game.
Ray Wooten homered and doubled and Sam Jaffee homered to lead the Leopards.
Liberty scored three times in the fifth to go ahead, 4-2.
John Krause and Justin Barker also tripled for the Leopards.
Mrosko tripled and Andy Richey doubled for the Tigers (7-1).
Softball
NORTH JACKSON -- Carrie Fiol had four hits and three RBIs in the first game and added two hits, three stolen bases and got her first pitching win in the second game, as Jackson-Milton defeated Southern, 16-0 and 10-3.
Billi Jo Byram had three hits and two RBIs and Kara Conrad added four RBIs in the first game, which was won by Krista Kiraly (5-5). Jessica Balent had three hits in the second game for the Bluejays (6-5).
Hannah Crews had five strikeouts in the second game for Southern.
Track and field
LIBERTY -- Warren Harding's Stephen Drake won both hurdles events to earn co-MVP honors and lead the Raiders to the boys team title at the Liberty Invitational.
Harding's Tyon Flower won the 400 and the Raiders won all four relays to edge Liberty 118-96 at the seven-team meet.
Brookfield's Tim Rosario won the 1600 and 3200 to share MVP honors with Drake and the Warriors' Ryan Martin won the 100.
Rayen's Rashawn Cook (800), Troy Rice (200) and Marquinn Davis (shot put) won events, as did Hubbard's Cody Pitts (discus), Lowellville's Lucas Gonzalez (long jump) and Liberty's Donovan Fletcher (high jump).
On the girls side, Lowellville's Rachel Mariotti won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles to earn MVP honors as the Rockets finished second to Hubbard (128-89) for the girls team title.
Hubbard's Jordana Lima (1600), Kristen Angelo (discus) won events and the Eagles won the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
Lowellville won the 4x800 relay and the Rockets' Katie Nentwick (long jump) and Ali Grapevine (800) won events.
Also finishing first were Chaney's Antoinette Smith (100, 200) and Latalia Jones (400), Rayen's Tyla Brown (shot), Brookfield's Jenna O'Brien (3200) and Liberty's Lauren Grinstein (high jump).
