BERNADETTE PETERS MAKES PITCH FOR RESCUING ANIMALS
Bernadette Peters makespitch for rescuing animals
NEW YORK -- When someone picks up a pet from a shelter, it's not just the animal that gets rescued, Bernadette Peters said. "They realize that you've saved them, and now they're there to maybe save you or connect with you," the actress said on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday. "They're very, very appreciative of being picked." As the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals turns 140 this week, the Broadway star said it's "sort of a sin" that animals are euthanized when no one will adopt them. "The rescued animals come with a history," she said. "They know their life is different now. They know that something has changed. They say dogs don't have memories, but I really do think that they do, dogs and cats."
Prince Andrew revealshuman side of the queen
NEW YORK -- Queen Elizabeth may have the weight of the monarchy on her shoulders, but it hasn't crushed her sense of humor, Prince Andrew said. At a family dinner once, a footman pulled the Queen's chair out from the table as she stood to go, but she tried to sit back down -- with no chair under her, her son told Time magazine for its issue on newsstands today. "Everyone, including the Queen, laughed and laughed -- and of course she reassured the terrified footman he had done nothing wrong," the prince said as his mother's 80th birthday approaches April 21. There's no question, though, that the monarchy is serious business. In her 54 years on the throne, she has seen changes aplenty -- and continues to be busy despite her age, the prince said. "She is incredibly fit," Andrew, 46, told Time. "But we remind staff that she's not just the monarch, but our mother. There's no need to do six engagements in a day."
Kid Rock rents theaterto show 'Benchwarmers'
ANDERSON, S.C. -- Kid Rock treated a few locals to a private showing of the new movie "Benchwarmers" after performing for students at nearby Clemson University. In true rock star fashion, the genre-crossing entertainer -- whose real name is Bob Ritchie -- rented out a movie theater Thursday, inviting everyone on his tour bus and a few locals. Despite his celebrity, he says that offstage he is "just Bob." "I try to stay humble," he said. "People forget this is all just fun. Good spirits and fun. There's no evil, no bad. It's all just fun. We're here for a good time." He said he wanted to be one of the first to see the film, starring his friend David Spade, which opened Friday.
