Ridge's Kiger leads Rams to team crown

MINERAL RIDGE -- Mineral Ridge's Abbey Kiger won the 100-meter hurdles and the 300 hurdles and finished second in the long jump to lead the Rams to the girls team title at Saturday's Joe Lane Invitational at Mineral Ridge High School.
The Rams edged Warren JFK 86-80. Beachwood was third.
JFK's Jamie Prozioso placed first in the 100, Jenn Natale won the 400 and Michelle Chaves won the 800. JFK also won all four relay events.
Western Reserve's Alex Rathburn won the shot put with a meet-record throw of 39 feet, 3 inches and also placed first in the discus. Teammate Kaelyn Hrabak won the 200.
South Range's Andra Sanders won the 1600 and 3200, Newton Falls' Kelsie Crowder won the high jump and Lordstown's Kayla Ellks won the long jump.
On the boys side, Warren JFK senior Tony Elzy won the 100 and was part of the winning 4x100 relay as the Eagles placed third behind Ashtabula Edgewood and Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph. The Eagles also won the 4x400 relay.
South Range's Mike Leskosky won the high jump and Southington's Ryan Gilanyi won the 3200.
Polar Bear Relays
MASSILLON -- Boardman's Brandon Rader, Jeremy Morales and Pat Palma combined to set a meet and school record in the shot put relay, throwing a combine 153-6 as the Spartans finished third in the Polar Bear Relays at Massillon Jackson High School.
Rader and Morales each hit career highs with tosses of 55-81/2 and 53-1, respectively. Palma had the night's fifth-best toss (44-81/2). Rader and Morales placed first and second overall. The combined effort broke the old mark of 146-31/2 by more than seven feet.
The previous school record holders were Evan Beard, Steve Vallos, and Rob Chiarello (146-41/4) at the Bedford Relays in 2002.
Rader joined Marc Chiarello and Evan Klepec on the winning discus relay. Spartan distance runners Matt Moore, Mike Lesko, Rick Lape and Jake Lape combined to win the 4x800 relay and the 4x1600 relay.
Jackson won the team title, while Massillon Perry finished second.
