Alcohol and bias
A report in this week's Journal of Personality and Social Psychology finds that consuming alcohol makes people more likely to express their racial bias because it reduces the activity of brain mechanisms responsible for behavior control. Researchers measured the electrical activity in participants' brains as pictures of black and white men and women flashed on a computer screen, followed quickly by words such as "violent" and "uptight." The researchers found that participants who consumed alcohol were most apt to apply the words in a stereotypical manner.
