Canfield's Sulick fires gem, fans 14
Melissa West's run-scoring single gave Canfield a 1-0 win over Fairless.
CANTON -- Sophomore Lauren Sulick struck out 14 in a no-hitter for the Canfield High softball team, which defeated Fairless, 1-0, on Saturday.
Canfield (3-0) scored its lone run when Melissa West singled in Courtney Rothbauer with one out in the top of the sixth inning.
Rothbauer doubled to lead off sixth followed by Ashley Bleggi's walk. Tricia Bettura's pinch-hit single in the fifth was the game's only other hit.
Sulick (2-0) allowed one walk against Fairless (5-2).
Canfield 6, Massillon 0
MASSILLON -- Senior Lauren McGivern had a home run, scored four runs and stole four bases for the Cardinals.
McGivern also had a leadoff triple in the third inning. She finished 4-for-4. McGivern's homer came with Tricia Bettura on base after Bettura doubled.
West, a sophomore, had two hits including a home run.
Bettura, a sophomore, struck out 13 and walked one in pitching a three-hitter.
Massillon dropped to 1-6.
Ursuline 13-7, St. Thomas 3-4
CANTON -- Ursuline benefited from 14 walks in the first game, a one-hitter by freshman Heather Shadden.
In the first game, Vannessa Dickson had a single and double and two RBIs while Ashley Siembieda had a double and knocked in two runs.
Shadden (2-1) walked four and struck out one.
In the second game, all of Ursuline's runs -- four in the third inning and three in the seventh -- were scored with two outs.
Dickson went 4-for-4 with three singles and a double.
Siembieda, a senior, and Jessica Yarab both had two singles and a double while Yarab, a sophomore, was also responsible for driving in two runs.
Winning pitcher Ashley Koval (4-2) also singled in two runs.
Howland 5, North Allegheny 1
HOWLAND -- Junior Ali Myers (3-0) struck out five and walked two in throwing a four-hitter.
Gia Pahoulis, a sophomore, had two singles including a two-out single in the second inning that drove in two runs. Also, Casey Haering had two RBIs for the Tigers.
Rachel Albani tripled in the bottom of the third for the winners.
Howland 7, Fitch 1
HOWLAND -- Freshman Abby Nicholas (2-1) struck out seven and walked one in pitching a three-hitter.
Casey Haering, Gia Pahoulis, Desiree Sibera and Erin Gilmour each had two of Howland's 11 hits. Sibera accounted for two RBIs.
The lone blemish on Howland's 6-1 record is a loss to Canfield.
Fitch is 2-4.
Mathews 2-2, Conneaut 1-9
VIENNA -- Caitlyn Youngs' single to right field scored freshman Alyssa DeJean with the game-ending and winning run with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of the first game for Mathews.
DeJean reached base on an error and advanced to second on a single by senior Rachel Woolf.
Youngs, a junior who is 4-0, had 13 strikeouts and three walks in throwing a three-hitter.
In Mathews' loss to Conneaut, freshman Audrey Dodgson had two RBIs for the Mujstangs (4-3, 1-1 Northeast Atlantic Conference).
Conneaut had 11 hits.
