EDITOR:
I am writing to commend the fine officers of the Youngstown Police Department for the great work they have done in creating a safe and friendly environment in downtown Youngstown.
I am the director of the Children's Museum of the Valley and our museum is located around the corner from the Chevrolet Centre. I park across from the center on the corner of Walnut and Front Streets. Since the center opened, and events have brought swarms of people to downtown, I have observed members of the police department as they direct traffic and pedestrians. I am proud of the work they do and feel that they have had a positive impact on how the Valley views the safety of downtown. They have truly done a stellar job.
I would also like to mention a situation that occurred recently. An older man, coming from Hermitage, tripped and fell on his way to the convocation center. I happened to be leaving work, and upon seeing the couple, brought them into the museum as the man was clearly injured and bleeding. Other pedestrians, seeing the accident, reported the incident to the police officers who were working in front of the center. Within minutes, two kind officers came into the museum and assisted us in contacting an ambulance. They were so kind and gentle with this couple and I was extremely proud of the way they represented the city of Youngstown.
The presence of the Youngstown Police Department has, in my opinion, had a positive impact on the revitalization of downtown Youngstown because they create an atmosphere where the community can feel safe and welcome.

Club thoroughly enjoyed a great season at the center

The Chevrolet Centre has done it again. The Steelhounds and the Chevrolet Centre continue to exceed any expectations we might have as customers.
The overwhelming positive feedback that has been buzzing in our group (Skating Club of Greater Youngstown) over the "Stars on Ice" show last Tuesday night has been exceptional. The show was simply fabulous: the quality of the show and skating talent was excellent. The professionalism of the presentation was superb and the courteous staff at the Chevrolet Centre was first-rate. Traffic backed up a bit, but we still had no trouble finding parking. Getting into the building was simple even when the house was filling to capacity. Lighting, sound, the huge, huge crowd -- the enthusiastic talk has gone on and on for two days.
To have that much talent at one time was a sight to see and to experience. If you are a skating fan and missed this show, you missed a spectacular event that was only minutes away. We did not have to travel to Cleveland or Pittsburgh to see quality skating entertainment. It was in our own downtown.
The members of the Skating Club of Greater Youngstown have enjoyed every event and Steelhounds hockey game we have attended, along with every club skating session we have skated at the Chevrolet Centre this past season. To hold our club sessions at the Chevrolet Centre has been a privilege. We have appreciated the new beautiful -- and warm -- building and welcoming staff.
We are very proud to support the Chevrolet Centre and downtown Youngstown. We thank former Mayor McKelvey and the city officials who made the project a reality and Mayor Williams and his government for the continuance of this wonderful venue. We thank Herb Washington for bringing CHL professional hockey to the center.
