Penguins, Canisius split at softball



CANFIELD -- Junior Tricia Hilbish fired a five-hit shutout while senior Tiffany Patteson belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead the Youngstown State softball team (6-10) to a 2-0 victory over Canisius on Thursday at McCune Park.
YSU's victory came in game two of a doubleheader against Canisius. The Penguins dropped the opener, 5-2.
In the opener, Canisius hit a two-run home run in the top of the first and another in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead. The Golden Griffins took a 5-0 advantage with a run in the top of the third inning.
YSU got on the board with two runs in the bottom half of the third on Jamie Fornal's two-run single to left field.
Youngstown State hosts Butler Saturday at 1 p.m. at McCune Park.
