Boxing roundup
*CHESTER, W. Va. -- Durrell Richardson of Youngstown will challenge James "The Heat" North of Weston, W. Va., for the West Virginia super middleweight boxing championship April 13.
Richardson (6-0, 4 KOs), who won the 2002 National Golden Gloves championship, will square off against North in a 10-round bout in The Harv at the Mountaineer Race Track & amp; Gaming Resort.
The under-card matchup is one of five bouts scheduled on the program. In the main event, Jose Gonzalez (12-2), a native of Mexico City, will defend his IBA featherweight championship against Verquan Kimbrough (14-0-1).
The vacant NABC heavyweight championship also will be up for grabs when Nicolai Firtha (9-1-1, 5 KOs) of Akron will face "Dangerous" Jim Northey (10-1, 7 KOs) of Brookville, Pa.
In a non-title bout, Monty Meza-Clay, the reigning IBA World super featherweight champion, will meet Leo Martinez (8-7, 4 KOs) of Columbus in an eight-round bout.
Also on tap is a non-title bout between Dan Harvison (13-0, 8 KOs) of McKeesport, Pa., and Mike Carr (15-1-2, 8 KOs) of Pittsburgh in a six-round battle.
*YOUNGSTOWN -- Joshua Harris of Youngstown has advanced to the National Golden Gloves Tournament April 23-30 in Omaha, Neb.
Harris, who is trained by Frank West at the Buckeye Elks Youth Center, qualified for the national meet by winning the open heavyweight championship in the Cleveland Golden Gloves Tournament last Saturday.
Harris, who is 22 and weighs 201, defeated Leland Smiley on a second-round TKO to win the Cleveland title.
He has a 21-10 amateur record.
Team needed
CHAMPION -- A girls track and field team is needed for the Champion Relays to be run April 13. Champion needs an official for that event plus one on April 21. If interested, call athletic director Tim Cope at (330) 847-2314.
OHSAA adds bowling
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio High School Athletic Association will recognize boys bowling and girls bowling beginning this fall.
Practices will begin Nov. 10, with competition set to start a week later. Teams will be permitted two scrimmages and 22 contests before the OHSAA-sponsored tournaments begin. There are about 160 boys and 160 girls bowling teams in the state. OHSAA rules permit the association to recognize sports once 150 schools sponsor teams.
Kyle Gabrick joinsNotre Dame College
SOUTH EUCLID -- Kyle Gabrick, an Austintown Fitch High graduate, has become part of wrestling history at Notre Dame College. Gabrick, a transfer from Youngstown State, became the first wrestler in Notre Dame College history to sign an NAIA letter of intent. He will begin wrestling for the school in its inaugural season during the 2006-07 academic year.

CANTON -- Stephen Perry, a former head of the U.S. General Services Administration, was named Thursday as the new president and executive director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Perry is a Canton native and graduate of the Univ. of Akron with a master's degree from Stanford.

Army coach dies
WEST POINT, N.Y. -- A month ago, 28-year-old Army coach Maggie Dixon left the Christl Arena court on the shoulders of jubilant cadets after leading the women's basketball team to its first NCAA tournament berth.
On Friday, Dixon was mourned in a chapel across the U.S. Military Academy's campus, a day after she died following a sudden episode of irregular heartbeat.
Dixon died Thursday night at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., academy spokesman Lt. Col. Kent Cassella said.
An autopsy conducted Friday found that Dixon had an enlarged heart and a problem with a heart valve, according to the Westchester County Medical Examiner's office. The valve problem could have caused her heart to beat irregularly and ultimately stop.
Matt Carle winsHobey Baker award
MILWAUKEE -- Matt Carle said his new NHL teammates in San Jose wished him luck when he left for Milwaukee to find out if he was the nation's top college player.
The former Denver defenseman won the Hobey Baker award Friday night, and predicts a different reaction when he returns to the Sharks to play Dallas on Sunday.
