CANFIELD -- Preliminary autopsy results of 49-year-old Diane Whitaker revealed no traumatic injury, Mahoning County Coroner David M. Kennedy said Friday in a press release. Whitaker, of Nelsonville, Ohio, was found dead early Thursday in a room at the Canfield Colonial Condotel & amp; Motel on Akron-Canfield Road. She had been the victim of domestic violence last Saturday. After discovery of the body, her ex-boyfriend was arrested and remains jailed on a charge of violating a protection order. He also faces a domestic violence charge. The cause and manner of Whitaker's death are pending completion of investigations by the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and the coroner's office.
Road closing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Oak Street Extension between Jacobs Road and Lamar Avenue will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Monday to allow installation of a storm water culvert near Rutledge Drive. Traffic on Oak Street Extension will be detoured via Jacobs and McCartney roads and Lamar Avenue. Access to all abutting properties will be maintained during the road closure.
Closed for culvert repair
YOUNGSTOWN -- Renkenberger Road in Beaver Township will be closed between Germantown and Green-Beaver roads for three days beginning Tuesday, Mahoning County Engineer Richard A. Marsico says. The road will be closed for culvert repairs. A traffic detour will be along Germantown, Garfield and Green-Beaver roads.
Route 711 ramp reopens
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Interstate 680 southbound exit to state Route 711 north is now open, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced Friday. The interchange had been closed since March 29 when a tanker truck overturned, spilling 8,500 gallons of gasoline.
Eagles' gift to police
YOUNGSTOWN -- A check for $4,000 was presented to Police Chief Jimmy F. Hughes on Friday from the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 213 on South Avenue for the purchase of stop sticks. The spiked devices are thrown in front of fleeing vehicles to shred tires and end pursuits. Eagles President Paul Robinson and Trustee Billy Meenachan were on hand for the presentation, as was Mayor Jay Williams. Hughes said the stop sticks, which cost about $300 each, will be placed in the beat cruisers.
Mail-fraud warning
FREDONIA, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police are warning residents about possible mail fraud being conducted in Mercer County. People have received letters from the International Lotto Commission in Madrid, Spain, stating they have won large amounts of money and they need to call an international telephone number. Police remind residents that some international calls are billed similar to 1-900 numbers and can cost hundreds of dollars. Residents should direct any mailings they receive to the Postmaster Inspector General's office or the Pennsylvania Attorney General.
Library sets open house
WARREN -- Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. N.W., will have an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. April 20 to mark the 10th anniversary of its Tech Center. The Tech Center offers library patrons free use of 16 computer workstations with Internet access and multimedia software, microfilm and microfiche collections, newspaper and obituary indexes, and a wide selection of subscription databases. Since the center opened April 16, 1996, its average patronage has grown from 900 to 2,300 visitors a month.
2 arrested in drug raids
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men were arrested on drug charges during raids on the South Side. At 356 E. Lucius Ave., Dana Wallace, 45, of Kenmore Avenue, was charged with possession of cocaine. Bond was set at $5,000 during his arraignment Friday in municipal court. At 417 Kenmore Ave., Jahnta C. Campbell, 33, of East Lucius Avenue, was charged with possession of crack cocaine and three counts of possession of dangerous drugs. His bond was set at $12,500. The raids were Thursday.
