PITTSBURGH -- Three area high school students were among 36 students honored at the Pittsburgh Technical Institute's Visions and Voices High School Art Show. Devon Klingensmith, a student at Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, took best of category honors for ceramics while Megan Brown, a student at Columbiana County Career & amp; Technical Center, took best of category in computer graphics. Ashley Dillinger, also a Columbiana County Career & amp; Technical Center student, took an honorable mention in computer graphics.
Local officer elected
YOUNGSTOWN -- Christine Domhoff, president of the 400-member Association of Classified Employees, the union representing nonteaching employees at Youngstown State University, has been elected secretary-treasurer of the National Council for Higher Education. She has been a member of the council for nearly 20 years. The council is an independent organization for all higher-education members of the union the National Education Association.
Handwriting champion
YOUNGSTOWN -- Taylor Love, a fourth-grader at Youngstown Community School, has been recognized as Ohio State Champion in the National Handwriting Contest sponsored by Zane-Bloser Educational Publishers, a leading publisher of handwriting materials. The contest evaluates handwriting legibility and more than 144,000 children participated nationwide in this year's event. Love received his award in a ceremony at the school Monday.
Engineering Day set
AKRON -- Goodyear Tire & amp; Rubber Co. will hold its sixth Engineering Day for Young Women on May 20 at its headquarters at 1144 E Market St. This year's free event has the theme, "Picture Yourself as an Engineer" and is open to children in grades six through 12. It will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and lunch is included. The program focuses on engineering and careers that can be launched from an engineering background. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in hands-on activities related to many engineering fields. Participants must register at www.goodyear.com/careerday by May 5. One parent must accompany each pupil to the event.
Author, pupils to meet
YOUNGSTOWN -- Author Shelley Pearsall will meet with eighth-graders at Volney Rogers Junior High School from 8 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, offering workshops on publishing, editing and writing. She will discuss her novels, "Trouble Don't Last" and "Crooked River." All eighth-graders have read "Trouble Don't Last" as a prelude to Pearsall's visit, which is designed to encourage pupils to become better readers and writers, promote writing careers and help them better understand the process of writing and publishing a book.
Open enrollment
LISBON -- The Beaver Local Board of Education has again chosen to offer open enrollment for the 2006-07 school year to pupils living in any Ohio school district. Parents making requests to have their children enrolled must apply before May 15. Applications are available at the superintendent's office at 13093 State Route 7, Lisbon.
Materials Camp planned
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Warren Chapter of American Society for Metals will hold a free Materials Camp for Teachers on July 17-21 at Youngstown State University. Send-off for group
YOUNGSTOWN -- There will be a Bon Voyage Send Off Reception at noon Sunday at Brownlee Woods Presbyterian Church, Everett Avenue at East Midlothian Boulevard, for The Youngstown Connection. The troupe will leave Thursday for 12 days of performances in China.
Alumni golf outing set
MONACA, Pa. -- The sixth annual Penn State Beaver Alumni Society Golf Outing will be held Sept. 11 at Seven Oaks Country Club, Beaver, with all proceeds benefiting the alumni society's endowed student scholarship at Beaver campus. NEOUCOM open house
ROOTSTOWN -- Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy will hold an open house to provide prospective students with information about admissions criteria, processes, timelines, curriculum, financial aid and career opportunities for both the doctor of medicine and doctor of pharmacy programs from 5:30-8 p.m. April 19 in the Ralph Regula Conference Center, 4209 state Route 44. The Ohio Board of Regents approved the establishment of a doctor of pharmacy program Nov. 10. To date, the program has received more than 1,100 inquiries from prospective students. Pharmacy classes will begin in the fall of 2007. The open house is free and open to the public, but space is limited and reservations are required.
