Missing boy found
YOUNGSTOWN -- An Amber Alert was being prepared after at least eight cruisers responded to the 200 block of East Boston Avenue and officers spent more than an hour searching for a 3-year-old boy reported missing by his mother late Monday. Police searched the mother's house and the immediate vicinity, including vehicle trunks and garages. The child was found with his father at a house in the 100 block of East Boston, police said. The father told police he saw his son walking in the street, the second time in as many days, and picked him up. The boy's mother and father are separated. A report of the event was forwarded to the Children Services Board.
Leak closes bank lobby
YOUNGSTOWN -- A second-floor water pipe that likely burst pre-dawn Tuesday at Sky Bank, 23 Federal St., sent water down to the main floor lobby and soaked the carpeting, said Beth Fallen, vice president of retail operations. The bank lobby was closed Tuesday, with employees directing customers to other branches, Fallen said. Depending on how fast the carpet could be dried, the bank lobby could reopen today but no later than Thursday, she said. No equipment was damaged.
Clean Sweep sign-up
AUSTINTOWN -- Deadline for participating in Austintown Clean Sweep, a communitywide cleanup, is Friday. Registration forms are available online at www. austintown2020.org, or call (330) 270-0316. The cleanup, sponsored by Austintown Junior Women's League, will be from 9 a.m. to noon April 29, rain or shine. A picnic lunch will be served at Austintown Township Park, Pogany Pavilion. Participants will receive a T-shirt and goodie bag. The league also is accepting donations of supplies such as trash bags and disposable gloves.
Just buzz for council
WARREN -- People wanting to attend public city council committee meetings after business hours won't be locked out of the Municipal Justice Building, 141 South St. S.E., anymore. A buzzer system was being installed Tuesday. A buzzer at the building's front door will ring inside council's caucus room, where committee meetings are held, and someone will emerge from meetings to let visitors into the building.
Tavern burglarized
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone positioned a ladder underneath an air conditioning unit at Evergreen's Tavern, South Avenue, and pushed it inside to gain entry to the building, police said. Once inside, the thief or thieves ransacked the office area and took about $1,500, reports show. The break-in was discovered Monday.
Chairmen endorsements
The Republican Southern Ohio Chairs Association unanimously endorsed state Rep. Charles Blasdel of East Liverpool in the party's May 2 primary for the 6th Congressional District. The association includes the Republican chairmen of 18 southern counties, including five in the 6th District. Blasdel has also received the endorsement of the Columbiana County Republican Party. There are 12 counties in the 6th District.
On the Democratic side, state Sen. Charlie Wilson of St. Clairsville, a write-in candidate, has the endorsement of the chairmen of his party in all 12 counties.
Crash demolishes big rig
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A tractor-trailer was demolished after the driver lost control on U.S. Route 422, Pennsylvania State Police said. Driver Travis M. Sholler of Volant was treated for minor injuries. Police said Sholler was eastbound at 8:13 a.m. Tuesday when his tractor-trailer veered into the right lane and hit the front end of an automobile driven by Amy C. Keilman of New Castle. The car went to the berm, while the tractor-trailer went into the median strip and flipped onto its roof. Keilman was uninjured.
