Baseball
PITTSBURGH -- Youngstown State scored eight runs in the second inning of a 10-6 victory over Duquesne Wednesday.
J.D. Hannan's two-run single was one of only four hits in the inning, as Duquesne pitchers walked three batters, hit two others and allowed two runs to score on wild pitches.
The Penguins (10-16), who won for the second straight day, play host to Wright State at Eastwood Field in a three-game series starting Friday.
Brandon Caipen doubled and had two hits for YSU, while Erich Diedrich tripled. Brent Parks also hit a triple, extending his hitting streak to nine games.
Steve Maiolo had three hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBIs to lead Duquesne (6-19).
Andy Svitak was credited with the win for YSU, allowing one hit and striking out one in two innings of relief. Starter Ryan Wackerman allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on five hits in two innings.
Softball
YOUNGSTOWN -- Wednesday's doubleheader against Canisius was postponed and rescheduled for today at 2 p.m. at McCune Park.
The Penguins will make up their doubleheader against Robert Morris Monday at 3 p.m. in Moon Township, Pa.

Boardman baseballscholarships
BOARDMAN -- The Chuck Schafer Memorial Scholarship Committee at Boardman Community Baseball will select three award winners for the 2005-06 academic year.
Each winner will receive a $1500 award. Applicants are to meet the following criteria: senior status, participated in Boardman Community Baseball for 5 years in the baseball or softball program, accumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and written essay. Applications are available at Boardman High School, Cardinal Mooney High School and Ursuline High School guidance offices. Applications are also available online at boardmanbaseball.com. Application must be postmarked on or before April 15.

Mascot change
MONROE, La. -- Indians are out, Warhawks are in.
Louisiana-Monroe, which had used the nickname Indians for 75 years, will now be known as the Warhawks.
The new mascot was picked from votes in an online poll after the NCAA banned the use of Indian names and imagery.
Louisiana-Monroe was among 18 schools deemed by the NCAA in August to have nicknames that are "hostile or abusive" to American Indians.
NHL fines Thrashers
TORONTO -- The NHL fined Atlanta Thrashers teammates Ilya Kovalchuk and Garnet Exelby $2,500 each Wednesday for separate incidents in a loss to the Ottawa Senators.
Wooden goes home
LOS ANGELES -- Former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden went home from the hospital Wednesday after a bout of diverticulitis.
The 95-year-old Hall of Fame coach was released in the morning and will rest at home for the next few days, UCLA sports information director Marc Dellins said.
Marshall Goldberg, 88, was Pitt star
CHICAGO -- Marshall Goldberg, an All-America running back at the University of Pittsburgh and key contributor to the Chicago Cardinals' only NFL championship, has died. He was 88.
Goldberg died Monday at a Chicago nursing home after spending several years battling the effects of brain injuries caused by numerous concussions during his playing days, his wife, Rita Goldberg, said Wednesday.
Huggins names aides
MANHATTAN, Kan. -- New Kansas State basketball coach Bob Huggins started putting his staff together Wednesday with the hiring of Frank Martin and Dalonte Hill as assistant coaches.
Martin, 40, has been an assistant at Cincinnati for the last two seasons, working under Huggins in 2004-05.
Hill, 27, has been an assistant for the past three seasons at Charlotte.
Duke coach resigns
DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University's lacrosse coach resigned and the school canceled the rest of the season amid a burgeoning scandal involving allegations that three players on the highly ranked team raped a stripper at an off-campus party.
Mike Pressler spent 16 seasons at Duke and won three Atlantic Coast Conference championships. Last year, his team appeared in the national championship game.
