Lakeview earns 1st TAC win



Girard beat Brookfield for its first win of the season.
CORTLAND -- Kailynn Cerny and fifth-inning reliever Abbey Bensing combined to pitch a seven-hitter with nine strikeouts as Lakeview High defeated LaBrae, 2-1, in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game Monday.
The Bulldogs (5-1, 1-1 TAC) scored two unearned runs in the second inning. Cerny had four strikeouts and Bensing had five. Cerny got the win to improve to 3-0.
Stepfanie Higgins took the mound loss for LaBrae (1-1, 1-1) with a five-hitter and eight strikeouts. She also had a pair of singles. Lia Gordon belted a homer for the Vikings.
Girard 4, Brookfield 1
BROOKFIELD -- Kristin Helle's two hits drove in three runs and included a two-run double as the Indians (1-6, 1-0 TAC) won their first game.
Winning pitcher Kassi Simeon struck out nine batters and walked two. For the Warriors (0-2, 0-2), Kara Egelsky struck out eight batters and walked none.
Lowellville 2, McDonald 1
MCDONALD -- Junior pitcher Carla Blinsky continued her recent mastery on the mound, participating in her third no-hitter in a week.
Last Tuesday, Blinsky combined on a no-hit effort against Rayen and Saturday the junior threw a no-hitter against Southern.
Blinsky (4-1) held McDonald to no hits and one walk, her first free pass of the season. She struck out seven and hit an RBI double. Catcher Casey Wilson added two singles and an RBI for the Rockets (5-1, 1-1 Inter-County League).
Springfield 7, Western Reserve 3
BERLIN CENTER -- Ten errors plagued Western Reserve, although junior Macy Marra, freshman Elizabeth Srock and senior Tarah Young each had two hits for the Blue Devils.
Srock knocked in two runs while Marra had one RBI.
Winning pitcher Krista Snyder, a senior, walked two and struck out five.
Of Springfield's 11 hits, senior Brittney Marinelli and Chelsea Quimby both were 2-for-3. Also for the Tigers (2-2, 2-0), senior Christy Warren had two RBIs while Ashley Fagnano and Courtney Sheely, both seniors, and freshman Breanne Mincher had an RBI apiece.
Poland 11, Niles 3
POLAND -- Junior catcher Kari Thompson had a grand slam and two doubles for six RBIs for the unbeaten Bulldogs (4-0). Sophomore Allie Patton added a double and two singles for Poland.
Jenna Medina pitched four innings (4-7), allowed two hits and struck out three. Starter Jenna Susany had three strikeouts over the first three innings.
Ursuline 16, Warren Harding 1
VIENNA -- Ashley Koval hit a three-run triple for the Irish (4-1, 1-0 Steel Valley Conference). Jessica Yarab's two hits drove in five runs.
Natalie Palermo's three hits drove in two runs. Jolanta Carkido and Vannessa Dickson had two hits.
Hoover 6, Boardman 4
BOARDMAN -- Debbie Warner hit a two-run triple during the Vikings' five-run fourth inning.
Felecia Houtz also tripled for the Vikings (4-1, 1-0 Federal League).
For the Spartans (2-3, 0-1), Samantha Peters doubled. In Boardman's four-run sixth inning, Mallory Hay and Justine Cullen had RBI singles.
Columbiana 5, Southern 2
COLUMBIANA -- Kristen Hart had two hits and two stolen bases, while Tierney Steiginga, Jeni Fast, Paige Papana and Katelyn Crowl each drove in a run for Columbiana (4-2, 3-0) in a Tri-County League game.
Emily Ramsey singled, stole four bases and scored twice for Southern (0-5, 0-3). Hannah Crews had 16 strikeouts and drove in two runs.
