Bulldogs and Blue Devils split
East Palestine won 8-7 and Western Reserve won 4-3.
EAST PALESTINE -- The East Palestine and Western Reserve High softball teams split a pair of eight-inning games Saturday.
The Bulldogs won the opener 8-7 when Becky Hill singled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hill had four hits including a two-run homer.
Macy Marra had three hits including a home run for Western Reserve.
In the second game, the Blue Devils (4-2) scored the winning run in the top of the eighth when Tarah Young doubled home McKenzie Mowrey. Mowrey had two hits for the Blue Devils.
Jesse Gamble had three hits and Jen Yokley added two for East Palestine (4-1).
Boardman 4, Springfield 1
BOARDMAN -- Ashley Fagnano of Springfield Local led off the game against Boardman with a home run, but the Spartans (2-2) broke a 1-1 tie when they scored three runs in the fifth inning to prevail.
Nicole Williams hit two double and a single and drove in three runs for the Spartans. Justine Cullen hit a pair of singles.
Christy Warren hit a triple and single for the Tigers (1-3).
Howland 7, Boardman 0
BOARDMAN -- Casey Haering (1-0) scattered four hits to pick up the win.
Maria Brutz Paced Howland (2-0) with two singles and she scored twice. Rachel Albani hit a bases-loaded single in the Tigers' five-run fifth inning.
Salem 7, St. Thomas 5St. Thomas 12, Salem 5
SALEM -- In the first game, Salem had three hits, including a double and single by sophomore Jordyn Hissom.
Hissom accounted for five runs for the Quakers, whose only other hit was a single by Bridget Szabat.
Aquinas had nine hits in the opener.
In the second game, sophomores Jess Matthews and Katie Malloy each had two hits for Salem (3-1).
Champion 1-5, Jefferson 0-1
CHAMPION -- Catcher Katie Saluga had a double in each game as the Champion High softball team swept a doubleheader from Jefferson.
Kasey Karr (1-1) and Brittany Skeels (2-0) earned the victories for the Golden Flashes (5-1), throwing a complete-game two-hitter and five-hitter, respectively.
Baseball
WARREN -- Scott Difford had a double, two singles and three RBIs while Stefan Aulizio and Brian Mulvey each had two singles and three RBIs to lead Warren JFK over Mineral Ridge 16-7 in the opening game of a doubleheader.
JFK won the second game, 7-4.
Josh Swipas contributed a double, two singles and one RBI to the Eagles.
Brandon Notar and fifth-inning reliever Mulvey combined to pitch a three-hitter.
In the nightcap, Craig Dudek and fifth-inning reliever Josh Cooper combined to pitch a two-hitter for JFK (3-1).
Josh Swipas had a double, two singles and three RBIs to lead JFK, while Cory Diles double, two singles and two RBIs and Marc Rossi two singles and two RBIs.
Mineral Ridge is 1-2.
Boardman 5, Upper Arlington 3
UPPER ARLINGTON -- Richie O'Brien struck out eight and walked two for the Spartans. Kevin Sikora's third-inning grand slam was the key hit.
Joe Iacabucci had two hits.
Jimmy Gerlack took the loss for Upper Arlington (2-2).
Boardman 12, Hilliard Davidson 6
UPPER ARLINGTON -- Iacabucci's three hits drove in four runs and included a homer.
Sikora's three hits included a homer and double, and drove in three runs. Anthony Lavolpa drove in three runs and doubled. Joe Bako tripled while Anthony Porter doubled for the Spartans (2-0).
Matt Wickiser tripled for Davidson (2-2).
Canton Cent. Cath. 2-7,Warren Harding 1-2
CANTON -- Andy Dobson had two hits for Warren Harding in the opener. Dobson was also the starter and loser for the Raiders, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) in four innings.
In the nightcap, Tom Popadak tripled and drove in a run for Warren Harding, which was limited to four hits overall.
