Stambaugh youth bandplans spring concert
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Henry H. Stambaugh Youth Concert Band will present its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Stambaugh Auditorium on Fifth Avenue. Admission is free and open to the public.
It will be the second concert program of the year for the prestigious organization composed of students from northeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Membership is by audition and is open to students from ninth through 12th grade.
The spring concert will open with the "Fanfare For Annapolis" and the "National Anthem." Jan Van deer Roost's "Puszta" will be next, followed by the Stambaugh Percussion Ensemble's "October Mountain."
Senior trumpet soloist will be Taylor Leonard from Poland Seminary High School.
The second half of the concert will include "Chorale and Shaker Dance" by John P. Zdechlik, "Lux Aurumque" by Eric Whitacre and Percy Aldridge Grainger's classic "Lincolnshire Posy."
Conductors are Thomas A. Groth, executive director; Shawn Vondran, associate director of bands at Youngstown State University; and Reed Chamberlin, graduate assistant at YSU. Tyler Husosky serves as Percussion Ensemble director.

Croatian music, dancetroupe to perform here
YOUNGSTOWN -- Zuna Folkloric Group of Bedekovcina, Croatia, is coming to Youngstown April 22 and 23.
The group, founded in 1993, preserves and presents Croatian music and dance folklore.
Zuna is well known throughout Croatia, and has performed in Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The 30-person troupe will perform at St. George Lodge 66, 3200 Vestal Road, Youngstown, on April 23. A special group of Zuna singers will sing the Stations of the Cross at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 421 Covington St., Youngstown, on April 22.

Children's Museumseeks volunteers
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Children's Museum of the Valley, 139 E. Boardman St., downtown, is seeking volunteers to serve as museum docents. An informational session for interested people will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Friday at the museum. Lunch and other refreshments will be provided after a brief tour and history of the organization.

Poet to discuss workat Westminster College
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Poet Jeredith Merrin will read and discuss her poetry at the Bleasby Colloquium at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Sebastian Mueller Theater in the McKelvey Campus Center. Merrin is the author of two collections of poetry, "Shift," released in 1996, and "Bat Ode," released in 2001. She has also published a book of criticism, "Marianne More, Elizabeth Bishop and the Uses of Tradition," and a number of her essays and reviews appear in publications such as The Southern Review. Three from Valley winPBS contest for kids
KENT -- Three Mahoning Valley children were named winners in PBS-TV 45/49's Reading Rainbow 12th annual Young Writers and Illustrators Contest. They are Daniel Daley, kindergarten, Reilly Elementary School of Salem, son of Park and Brenda Daley; Alexandria Skowronski of Garrettsville, second grade, St. Joseph's School, Mantua, daughter of Annamarie D'Orazio-Skowronski and Daniel Skowronski; and Hallie Yerian of Poland, third grade, Poland Union Elementary, daughter of John and Louise Yerian.
Sax, piano concertslated at Bliss Hall
YOUNGSTOWN -- James Umble, a music professor at Youngstown State University, and pianist Jun Okada will present a free concert for saxophone and piano at 8 p.m. April 11 in Bliss Recital Hall. Umble is an internationally recognized performer and clinician and frequently plays in chamber music concerts with members of the Cleveland Orchestra. Okada, of Michigan, is one of the leading collaborative pianists in the country.
