AUSTINTOWN -- A veteran Fitch High School science teacher has been indicted on charges accusing him of having sex with a female student.
Gerald C. Reedy, 56, of Alverne Street, Poland, was indicted Thursday on six counts of sexual battery. The case was directly presented to a Mahoning County grand jury.
Last week, a 17-year-old Maplecrest Drive girl, a student at Fitch, told police that she became involved sexually with Reedy beginning in February 2005. The activity was initially reported by the girl's father.
Detective Sgt. Ray Holmes said that under Ohio law, it's considered sexual battery, a felony, for a teacher to have sex with a student enrolled in the school where he or she teaches.
The girl was a student of Reedy's, he said.
The detective declined to specify where the sexual activity occurred other than to say it was in Austintown and Poland.
Time frame
The indictment says that the sexual conduct occurred from February through August.
Holmes notified school officials of the allegations last week.
Superintendent Douglas Heuer said that as soon as the district was notified, Reedy was immediately placed on home assignment -- meaning he was not to have contact with any Fitch students or parents.
Heuer said that when the district was notified Thursday of the indictment, Reedy was placed on paid leave until the case is resolved, according to state law and the teachers' union contract. Heuer said the leave isn't considered disciplinary because the allegations against Reedy haven't been proved.
Douglas McGlynn, Fitch principal, called the allegations "very surprising."
Pulled from school
McGlynn said the girl's mother withdrew her daughter from the school district Monday, but he does not know where she'll be attending school.
Reedy has taught in the district for 33 years, McGlynn said. He teaches earth science and physical science. He was also an assistant girls track coach last year, Heuer said.
Reedy could not be reached to comment.
He is the second Fitch teacher in less than a year to be accused of illegal activity involving a student.
Last May, William Iagulli, 49, of Rockwell Road, a social studies teacher and girls track coach at the high school, pleaded innocent in Mahoning County Court to misdemeanor charges of telecommunications harassment and solicitation.
A 25-year veteran of the district and former president of its teachers union, Iagulli is accused of soliciting another person for sexual activity for hire and using a telecommunication device to harass another person.
Iagulli also has been on paid administrative leave since the charges were filed. His case is pending.
Vehicular homicide
The grand jury also indicted a Campbell man Thursday on a charge of aggravated vehicular homicide. Edwin Moran Jr., 25, of Monroe Street, is accused of crashing into a car driven by Angela D'Altorio, 54, of Boardman on Sept. 23 at Oakwood and Hazelwood avenues.
D'Altorio died at the scene.
Youngstown city prosecutors have said that Moran's blood-alcohol level was 0.202 and that he had marijuana and Valium in his system.
