Local efforts to aid Hurricane Katrina victims:
The pupils and staff at Robinwood Lane Elementary School in Boardman, inspired by the plight of Hurricane Katrina victims, raised $1,035 through the "Robinwood Relief" fund drive. The effort began on the second day of school and ended Sept. 16. The money was delivered to the Mahoning County Red Cross offices to be added to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
Monetary donations are still being accepted by Catholic Charities -- Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, Office of Social Action, Diocese of Youngstown, 144 W. Wood St., Youngstown, OH 44503. To date, the Diocese of Youngstown has raised more than $322,120. The diocese also is participating in Catholic Charities USA "Operation Home Away From Home" project to identify local housing resources for temporary housing needs for evacuees. For information, call Brian R. Corbin at (330) 744-8451.Staff and students at Hubbard High School collected $1,091 for Hurricane Katrina victims. The fund raising took place Sept. 12-16. The money has been sent to the Save the Children organization to be used to help displaced school pupils.
The Salvation Army and Eastwood Mall have raised money for the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. The organization had its kettles at the mall for two days, raising $10,000 through donations. The Cafaro Foundation matched the contributions with a total of $20,000 going to the Salvation Army.
Employees of Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital presented a $10,000 check to the American Red Cross Wednesday for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Members of the hospital's Federated Giving Program gave the check to Jackie Bell Wolf, director of development and marketing for ARC's Trumbull Chapter. Normally, the program helps hospital employees or other local residents in need, but, this year, the program committee decided to assist hurricane victims in Louisiana and Mississippi.
