Howland remains undefeated with 2-0 victory over Canfield

HOWLAND -- Senior forward Erin Gilmour and freshman forward Megan Long each scored a goal in the first six minutes of the game, as the Howland High girls soccer team stayed unbeaten with a 2-0 win over Metro Athletic Conference rival Canfield on Wednesday.
Junior Melissa Kohn and sophomore Deja Amato each had an assist for the Tigers (9-0, 5-0), who defeated the Cardinals 2-1 earlier in the season. Junior Melissa Airhart had two saves for Howland while Ashley Hunter had four saves for Canfield (7-3-1, 2-3).
Last year, Howland was unbeaten in the regular season until losing in the Division I district championship game to Green, 2-1 in OT.

Niles 2, Champion 1
CHAMPION -- Freshman Aliesha Sharpe and senior Ashley Lokash had a goal apiece for the Red Dragons (9-3), who led 2-0 at halftime.
Brittany Bako scored for Champion (6-4-3) with two minutes left.
Gabby Belcastro had five saves for Niles. Champion's Kelly Dillon had three saves and Beth Sayers had seven. JVs: Niles 2, Champion 1.
Ursuline 3, Warren JFK 2
YOUNGSTOWN -- Katelyn Tondo-Steele, Hannah Snyder and Elizabeth Emanuel each scored goals for Ursuline in a Steel Valley Conference game.
Geralyn Tondo-Steele, Mariah Snyder and Kaila Buckley added assists for the Irish (5-4-3, 2-1) and Jolanta Carkido had six saves.
Jacqee Lombardi had seven saves for JFK (6-5-2, 0-2-1).
Maplewood 4, Badger 1
KINSMAN -- Kristina Peterson scored two goals to lead Maplewood (6-2-3, 4-0-1) to its first Northeast Athletic Conference championship.
Erica Pinko and Katya Domes each added a goal for the Rockets and Michelle Sloan had an assist. Leah Dean had 12 saves.
Kayla Arnold scored for the Braves (5-5, 3-2).
Late Tuesday
GATES MILLS -- Kelli Willis, Kelly Burke, Sarah Garchar and Katie Griswold scored a goal apiece for Mooney, which defeated Gilmour Academy 4-1. Marisa Simon had two assists and Alex Sierra had one for the Cardinals (7-2-1). Natalie Humphreys recorded five saves.
Poland 5, Salem 1
POLAND -- Sarah Anderson and Maureen Malone each scored two goals and Kelly Storkel had one for the Bulldogs (8-2, 6-1 MAC). Anderson, Jessi Toth, Ashley Luthern, Jackie Cavalier and Felicia Delisio each had assists.
Stephanie Papparodis scored for the Quakers (5-6-1, 0-6).
Fitch 4, Uniontown Lake 1
UNIONTOWN -- Jodi Bowlen had a goal and an assist for Fitch (5-3-3, 2-0-2 Federal League). Dana Lucido, Kristi Brendlinger and Dina Harris each added goals and Tara Calai had 12 saves.
Vanessa Schmidt scored for Lake (3-5-5, 0-3-2) and Danielle Fleischman had 18 saves. JVs: Lake 1-0
Boys soccer
BOARDMAN -- Nick Antonucci and T.J. Hosa scored goals for Boardman, which tied Canton GlenOak 2-2 in a Federal League game on Tuesday. Bob Davis and Sam Ragan each had an assist for the Spartans (7-3-1).
Howland 1, Canfield 0
CANFIELD -- Ian Jones scored for the Tigers (8-3, 4-1 MAC). Howland goalkeeper Paul Burley left with an injury 15 minutes into the contest after one save. Junior Josh Allison completed the first half with one save and freshman Dan Miller had two saves for the Tigers in the second half.
Eric Clayton had six saves for Canfield.
