Eagle Scout honors
Michael Anthony Makara, 16, a son of Ray and Trish Makara, Garwood Drive, Canfield, received his Eagle Scout award at a Court of Honor ceremony Sept. 21 at Canfield United Methodist Church.
Michael was a member of Cub Scout Pack 25 at the church from 1995 to 1999 and received the highest rank, Arrow of Light. He joined Boy Scout Troop 25 in 1999. His Scoutmaster is Kevin Prus Sr.
He has the position of assistant senior patrol leader and troop bugler and formerly was troop scribe, patrol leader, senior patrol leader and guide.
He earned 26 merit badges and the 50-Miler Award, 5th-Year Pipestone, Gettysburg Trail Medal with patches and Polar Bear award. He participated in special Scout activities including Ordeal member of Wapashuwi Lodge, Order of the Arrow; Gettysburg 2001 and Tinnerman Canoe Base Canada 2003.
For his Eagle service project he planned, designed, coordinated and supervised the construction of a classroom storage unit at Youngstown Community School on Essex Street in Youngstown.
Michael is a junior at Canfield High School, where he is an offensive and defensive tackle on the varsity football team, and he's a member of the school's symphonic orchestra. He is a member of St. Michael Church in Canfield.

Weese receives doctorate
Terri Lynn Weese has received her doctor of philosophy degree in plant systematics from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
Weese, a 1992 graduate of South Range High School, received a bachelor's degree in biology and secondary education from Grove City College, Grove City, Pa., and earned a master's degree in botany from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C.
She is working on a National Science Foundation funded post-doctoral fellowship in plant systematics at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
She is the daughter of Terry and Mary Weese of North Lima.
