PREP FOOTBALL Mooney rolls past Canton Central 42-14

The unbeaten Cardinals scored a touchdown in every quarter.

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Cardinal Mooney High football team broke a 7-7 tie with two quick touchdowns in the second quarter, then coasted to a 42-14 victory over Canton Central Catholic on Saturday at Stambaugh Stadium.
Mooney (5-0) scored at least one touchdown in ever quarter.
With score tied at 7, Mooney took the ball on its own 20 and drove 80 yards for a score. The drive was spearheaded by quarterback Derrell Johnson, who started the march with a 25-yard run and added runs of 11, 4 and 4 yards to get to the Crusaders' 30. Johnson then dropped back to pass, but saw an opening in Central Catholic's defense and ran untouched into the right corner of the end zone.
Cardinals take command
After forcing a three-and-out in just 55 seconds, Mooney got the ball back on its own 46. Nate Burney ran for 20 yards on first down and Johnson followed with a 32-yard run on the next play to get to the Crusaders' 2.
Johnson, who rushed for 107 yards on 10 carries, helped pave the way for Burney's 2-yard TD run, giving the Cards a 21-7 lead at halftime. Johnson sat out the second half.
Burney finished with 108 yards on 19 rushes. He scored his second TD, a 1-yard plunge, in the fourth quarter.
Field position played a key role the entire evening as Mooney started its first two drives on the Central Catholic 45 and 43-yard lines. The Crusaders, meanwhile, started from their own 19, 21 and 18 yard lines.

The Cards were still playing the field position game in the third quarter when Dom Scarnecchia got off a 43-yard punt that pinned the Crusaders on their own 2.
After a three-and-out, Ken Coleman put the contest away for the Cards when he returned a punt 34 yards for a TD to put Mooney ahead 28-7. Mike Zordich scored Mooney's final TD in the fourth quarter on an 18-yard run.
Brent Crawford scored for the Crusaders with less then two minutes remaining on a 18-yard run.
The Mooney defense was aided by Desmond Marrow, who intercepted a pair of Crusader passes.
