PENNSYLVANIA Program helps children who face weight issues

Insurance isn't required to participate in the program.
NEW CASTLE -- Children struggling with weight issues can get help through a nationally recognized family-based weight management program.
KidShape & reg; is available in Pennsylvania through funding from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. With the cooperation of Jameson Health System, it is being offered in Lawrence County for the first time. Classes for registered participants will be at Jameson South Conference Center starting Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Developed in California in 1987 by a pediatric endocrinologist, KidShape & reg; has helped families improve their eating and exercise habits. Eighty-seven percent of children lose weight during the nine-week program. Children who return for follow-up sessions report maintaining weight or continuing weight loss 11/2 to 21/2 years after the program ends.
The program is geared toward children ages 6 to 14. They are referred into the program, based on weight criteria, by a physician, school nurse or other health care provider. Participants don't have to have Highmark insurance -- or any insurance -- to participate.
The KidShape & reg; curriculum, intended to help families adopt better nutrition habits and engage in more frequent physical activity, includes nutrition education, physical activity and group and peer support. A registered dietitian, mental health professional and physical activity specialist work as a team to conduct the sessions held once a week for nine weeks.
A parent must attend sessions with the child, and together they enjoy hands-on activities that are educational but fun. An incentive program motivates children to stay with the program. Children have an opportunity to earn prizes based on attendance and completed assignments,
