Pastor to celebrate 50th year of priesthood at St. Michael's
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Very Rev. Protopresbyter George Hutnyan, pastor of St. Michael Orthodox Church, 125 Steel St., will be honored as he marks his 50th anniversary in the priesthood and at the church.
Metropolitan Nicholas Smisko of the Carpatho-Russian Diocese of Johnstown, Pa., will preside at a Divine Liturgy at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 2 at the church. A dinner is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Antone's Banquet Center.
Father Hutnyan is married to the former Dorothy Gost of Johnstown. She is a retired teacher from E.J. Blott School, Liberty, where she taught for 28 years. The couple marked their 50th wedding anniversary July 23. They have two children, David N. Hutnyan of Boardman and Nina C. Hutnyan of Canfield, and two grandchildren.
Father Hutnyan graduated from Christ the Saviour Seminary in Johnstown. He has bachelor's degrees from Youngstown State University and a master's degree in education from Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pa. He also has taken additional credit hours toward a doctorate in education at the University of Akron.
Father Hutnyan was ordained July 31, 1955, by the Most Rev. Orestes P. Chornock. He was assigned to St. Michael's on Aug. 18, 1955, and has remained there.
He has been active in the Eastern Orthodox Clergy Association of Mahoning Valley and chaplain to the Eastern Orthodox Men's Society. He is a chaplain for Orthodox patients at St. Elizabeth Health Center and Forum Health.
