POLAND -- Dr. Steven D. Robbins, internal medicine physician, will discuss his techniques to help students achieve better grades in a free lecture sponsored by Friends of the Library at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Poland Library meeting room, 311 S. Main St.
He is the author of "The Third Tier: The Spirit of Athletics, The Power of Learning," which offers practical tips on studying.
College Planning Night
AUSTINTOWN -- The guidance department of Austintown Fitch High School will hold a free College Planning Night at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 in the school cafeteria. The meeting will provide information to parents of juniors and seniors on the process of selecting a college. Applications, admission criteria, interviews and financial aid will be among the topics covered.
Youth leadership class
YOUNGSTOWN -- Applications for the Youth Leadership Mahoning Valley Class of 2006 will be available to high school sophomores with leadership potential during September and October. The program provides opportunities for students to learn about the major systems in the Mahoning Valley and to develop effective working relationships with its leaders.
Participants complete a six-month program which includes a two-day opening retreat in December and six monthly daylong sessions which focus on issues of concern to the community including health care; social services; education; heritage of the Valley; media and the arts; business opportunities; government and criminal justice; and quality of life. The program concludes with a graduation dinner in May.
Tuition of $200 covers all program costs. Partial tuition assistance is available based on financial need. To apply, call (330) 941-1980, or e-mail the LMV office at lmv@leadershipmv.org. Requests must be received by Oct. 5.
Citizenship classes
YOUNGSTOWN -- The English Center will open for Tuesday evening citizenship and conversation classes for immigrants Oct. 4. Classes meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The school, at 1125 Turin Ave., is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The English Center is a Speaker of Other Languages site for Youngstown City Schools.
Historian to visit
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Dr. Richard Pipes, noted historian of Russia and Communism at Harvard University, will visit the Grove City College campus as the 2005 Pew Memorial Lecturer. He will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Sticht Lecture Hall in the Hall of Arts and Letters on "The Russian Revolution and the Cold War." The program is free and open to the public.
Accreditation for SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University's computer science department has received accreditation by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET Inc., the recognized accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering and technology. The accreditation recognizes the department's program in computer science as well as five concentrations in its information systems area.
ABET is a not-for-profit organization, owned and operated by its more than 25 professional and technical member societies.
Ex-diplomat to speak
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Ann Wright, a former U.S. diplomat who resigned from the Bush administration in protest of foreign policy, will speak at Westminster College at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the McKelvey Witherspoon Maple Room.
Wright resigned from the U.S. Foreign Service in March 2003 for a variety of reasons, including that she disagreed with the decision to go to war in Iraq without authorization of the U.N. Security Council.
Wright started with the Foreign Service in 1987 and has served as deputy chief of mission of embassies in Sierra Leone, Micronesia and Afghanistan.
Before entering the Foreign Service, she was in the Army for more than 20 years and attained the rank of colonel.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
Malone sets record
CANTON -- Malone College, a Christian college for the arts, sciences and professions, set an enrollment record of 2,293 students this fall. The mark tops the previous high of 2,253 set one year ago. The new numbers include a record 357 students enrolled in graduate programs in education, counseling, Christian ministries, business and nursing. Malone also had a record 119 transfer students this fall.
Therapist will lecture
SLIPPERY ROCK -- Author and licensed marriage and family therapist Dr. Jill Murray will offer "But He Never Hit Me," dealing with building healthy relationships through personal empowerment when she visits Slippery Rock University at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The free lecture will be in the Swope Music.
Murray is a nationally recognized expert in the field of domestic violence as well as a leading internationally recognized expert in teen dating violence.
