A stop on the Underground Railroad

Van Nelson and his goddaughter, Shanyla Bundy, 1, both of Warren, admire a new marker that honors the role of Trumbull County residents in the Underground Railroad. It was dedicated Saturday in downtown's Monument Park. One side recognizes the abolitionists who helped slaves escape the South via the "Warren-Ashtabula Turnpike," and the other side specifically tells the story of Leicester King, who offered food and shelter to escaping slaves in his house, which once stood near the marker site. Nelson also directed the Ministerial Alliance Community Choir, which performed for the unveiling of the marker. In the background is First Presbyterian Church.
