Local efforts to aid the Hurricane Katrina victims:
Girard: Pleasant Valley Church is accepting material and monetary donations for a relief trip to the New Orleans area Oct. 9 to Oct. 20. Liberty Township Trustee Jack Simon is leading a team of volunteers who will plan to stay at Berean Bible Church near Algiers, La., and help repair homes in the area. Boardman: Children at St. Charles School have raised $6,250 in a campaign to aid in relief efforts. The pupils have emptied piggy banks, gone door to door and appealed to family and friends in the fund-raising effort. The money will go to Catholic Charities Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. The effort is part of this year's stewardship theme, "Strengthening Community," at St. Charles School.
New Springfield: Springfield and South Range student councils are sponsoring a benefit night for victims at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at Springfield High School. Admission is by donation with proceeds going to the American Red Cross. Activities include a volleyball game between South Range and Springfield elementary teachers, a basketball game between South Range and Springfield middle school teachers, and five dodge-ball games pitting high school teachers from each school against one another, and games between the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes of each high school. There also will be a silent auction, tug-of-war contest, and entertainment by South Range and Springfield high school jazz bands and cheerleaders.
Sharon, Pa.: The Daffin family of Sharon is donating 50 cents from each $1 Daffin candy bar sold at its retail stores for American Red Cross and Salvation Army relief efforts for victims. Daffin's retail stores are in Franklin, Greenville and Sharon, Pa., and in Warren. The family will make donations on sales through Sept. 30.
