3 men on fishing trip die
YOUNGSTOWN -- Authorities in Ontario, Canada, have determined that three men with local ties died there last week of carbon monoxide poisoning, said Sharyn Common, whose husband, Michael Common, 66, of Goshen, was one of the victims.
Common, his brother Richard Common, 61, of Alliance, and Richard's son, James, 24, a West Branch High School graduate who lived in Tampa, Fla., were found dead Sept. 17 in a remote fishing cabin near Gogama in northern Ontario.
Police believe carbon monoxide came from a propane refrigerator in the cabin. Sharyn Common said coroners told family members they could find no other cause of the men's deaths.
Ontario provincial police said they think the men died between Sept. 14 and 17, because police found digital photos from Sept. 14.
Police said a fishing guide discovered the men's bodies last Saturday. The guide walked to the cabin in search of the men when they did not show up at a boat dock to begin the trip home.
Man reports $300 robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 30-year-old East Ravenwood Avenue man told police he was robbed of $300 at gunpoint when he went to a house in the 200 block of Kenmore Avenue to buy drugs Wednesday.
The robbery victim said two men in the house claimed that he owed them from a previous drug buy. When he turned over $300, the suspects wanted $150 more -- for taxes. He ran out and called police from home to report the crime, adding he'd also contact the city prosecutor's office to file charges.
17-year-old shot in hand
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-year-old Delason Avenue boy dressed all in red was shot in the left hand Wednesday afternoon on the South Side when he pushed a gun aside from a man who approached and asked if he was a Blood. Members of the gang wear red. The boy, who had been walking home from a store on Erie Street, said the suspect ran south on Erie.
Man with concealed gun sentenced to 6 months
YOUNGSTOWN -- Christopher Dawson, 25, of West Chalmers Avenue, will spend six months in prison for his guilty plea to carrying a concealed weapon.
Dawson also will serve three years parole.
Dawson told Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on Thursday he had the gun in his car for protection. He had been shot before and left with his leg partially paralyzed. Judge Krichbaum cited Dawson's previous misdemeanor drug conviction -- which leaves him ineligible for a gun permit -- and the fact he was on probation when pulled over, as factors in the prison sentence.
Purse robbery reported
BOARDMAN -- An Aravesta Avenue woman told police that a masked man took her purse as she was sitting in her car outside her apartment building.
The woman told police that she was in her car shortly after midnight Wednesday when a man wearing a mask, dark pants and a dark shirt got into her car, shoved her and took her purse, and then fled behind the apartment building.
