CAMPBELL -- Free fresh fruit and vegetables are on the menu and in classrooms every day for Campbell Schools students this school year from kindergarten through eighth grade thanks to an $85,133 grant from the Ohio Department of Education.
The purpose in the menu change is to combat obesity by offering children alternatives to less-healthy foods, said Janice Biej-Tych, schools food service supervisor, at Tuesday's board of education meeting.
Biej-Tych, who applied for the grant through the state education department's Office of Child Nutrition, said teachers will distribute the fruit and vegetables in their classes during the day. Fruit and vegetables also will be available in the cafeteria during lunch times.
She said Campbell is one of 25 school districts in the state to receive a grant.
Donation
The board also heard an announcement from new Schools Superintendent Thomas D. Robey that the Steel Valley Fellowship of Christian Athletes donated 100 refurbished bicycles to the district to be given to fourth-grade pupils who pass their proficiency test. Also, the FCA donated 600 pairs of shoes to Campbell students, he said.
Robey thanked the staff, students and community for making him and the other new administrators feel welcome and for the successful start to the new year.
"We have challenges, but with everybody's help we'll make our schools better for our students," Robey said.
