Suspect arrested in theft by deception of 88-year-old

The man claimed he needed money for car repairs, food and electric bills.
BOARDMAN -- Police arrested a Melrose Avenue man accused of deceiving an 88-year-old man into giving him cash and checks.
Thomas Baulo, 46, was charged with theft by deception, a felony. He was arrested Friday evening and released after posting bond.
What happened
The 88-year-old told police that about a month ago he was at a Boardman-Canfield Road drugstore and that when he returned to his Glenwood Avenue home, a man, later identified as Baulo, told him that his vehicle had struck Baulo's in the store's parking lot.
The victim wasn't sure if the accident happened, according to a police report, but he told Baulo to get an estimate and that he'd pay for the damage.
Baulo returned the next day and said he needed $450 to fix the car's headlight. The victim gave him the cash, and Baulo came back later the same day and said he needed $40 to pay the tax. The victim gave him that money as well.
Baulo returned a few days later saying that his son was in the hospital and that he was hard up for cash and the victim gave him an unspecified amount of money.
He returned on subsequent occasions and requested and was given money for car repairs and an electric bill. He tried again, asking for money for food for his family, but a woman who was at the victim's house told him that he could get into a food assistance program, and he left without any money.
But on Thursday, Baulo returned and the victim wrote him a check for $450 to pay an electric bill. A witness then called police.
