UNIVERSITY OF AKRON College announces speakers for Forum Series



Royalty, a football great and a noted journalist are among the speakers.
AKRON -- Author and journalist Bob Woodward will kick off the 2005-06 University of Akron Forum Series at 8 p.m. Friday.
The award-winning author and journalist is assistant managing editor of The Washington Post and has authored or co-authored at least eight No. 1 national best-selling nonfiction books, including "All the President's Men" about the infamous Watergate scandal. His most recent book, "The Secret Man: The Story of Watergate's Deep Throat," looks at the Watergate scandal and the identity of Deep Throat. He will speak at the Akron Civic Theatre.
Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan will speak at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at E.J. Thomas Hall on campus. She is a leading voice for the understanding of Middle Eastern politics, Arab-Western relations and global issues. Since 1978, she has initiated, directed and sponsored projects and activities in Jordan to address specific national development needs in areas of education, culture, women and children's welfare, human rights, conflict resolution, public health, social development and environmental issues.
Football star
Joe Montana, legendary quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, will appear at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at E.J. Thomas Hall. His many accomplishments include four Super Bowl wins and having the highest quarterback rating in NFL history. His talk shares the lessons of preparation, teamwork and performance under pressure.
Dr. Henry Louis Gates, chairman of the Afro-American Studies program and professor at Harvard University, will appear at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at E.J. Thomas Hall. He is the author of several works of literary criticism, host and executive producer of the BBC/PBS documentary "Wonders of the African World," staff writer for The New Yorker and co-editor of Transitions magazine.
Calvin Trillin, journalist, novelist and satirist, will speak at 7:30 p.m. March 21 at E.J. Thomas Hall. Trillin is known for his droll commentaries of the American scene and tales of his adventures as a "happy eater." He writes about politics, family and food in The New Yorker and The Nation. Joining Trillin will be journalist R.W. "Johnny" Apple Jr. An Akron native, Apple is associate editor of The New York Times and has corresponded from more than 100 countries.
Choreographer
Twyla Tharp, award-winning choreographer, will appear at 7:30 p.m. April 3 at E.J. Thomas Hall. She has choreographed more than 125 dances, five Hollywood movies, and directed and choreographed two Broadway shows. Tharp and Billy Joel's award-winning musical, "Movin' Out," will be performed at E.J. Thomas Hall on May 2-7.
