Sorority to host awards ceremony



Proceeds will provide scholarships and support community service activities.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will host its fourth annual "Tribute to Black Excellence Awards" event from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Sept. 30 at The Embassy, 5030 Youngstown Poland Road.
Tickets for the evening are $35 a person and include dinner and dancing.
Proceeds from the event will be used to provide scholarships to deserving students, to support the Betty Shabazz Academy and GEMS (programs for young women), for voter education and other public services in the community.
Recognized during the event will be the following honorees and their categories:
UBetty English -- economic development.
UJay Williams -- economic development.
UDr. Donald Persons -- physical and mental health.
UAtty. Cherie Howard -- political awareness and involvement.
UThe Rev. Lonnie Kwajo-Asim Simon -- international awareness and involvement.
Michele Dotson is serving as chairman of the planning committee, and committee members are Nancy Murray, Annette Jones, Lynette Sutton, Fawn Allison, Cynthia Moore, Louella Henderson and Nikki Davis, who is in charge of publicity.
