AUSTINTOWN -- Frank Ohl Middle School has been awarded a $40,000 Ohio Reads grant to help children improve their reading skills. The money will be received over a two-year period and be used to involve teachers, pupils, parents and community members in the reading lives of the children. After-school literacy clubs, teacher training, literacy special enrichment sessions for fifth- and sixth-graders and working with a literacy coach are all part of the plan to improve reading skills. The school is also looking for volunteers to work with individuals and small groups in a tutoring format. Interested persons should call Regina Teutsch at (330) 797-3900, Ext. 1309.
Adult literacy classes
AUSTINTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley-area Adult Basic Education and Literacy Education Program will begin its 35th year of classes at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Room 131 at Austintown Middle School. The program is free to anyone over the age of 18 and offers classes in math, science, social studies, English, reading and writing for those wanting to take the GED test or just to brush up on their skills. Westminster rededication
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Old Main Memorial, Westminster College's landmark building, will be rededicated at 6 p.m. Friday on the Senior Terrace.
The current Old Main, the third such building on this site, was completed in 1929. The first Old Main was built in 1855 and burned in 1861. The second was lost to fire in 1927.
The $3 million renovation of Old Main included an upgrade of the electric system, installation of air conditioning, accessibility improvements and other refurbishments. The renovation began in December 2004.
Old Main is home to Westminster's two largest academic departments, education and economics and business, and also includes offices for various student and administrative services, including academic affairs and the president's office.

Hurricane-relief concert
CANTON -- A week of Homecoming activities at Malone College will begin with a hurricane-relief concert by the Lester Finn Experiment at 8 p.m. Oct. 11 in Osborne Hall. The concert is free and open to the public and a free-will offering will be taken to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina. Lester Finn Experiment, formerly Candle Rain, has received a nomination for "Modern/College Rock Song of the Year" in the American Christian Music Awards.
