CANFIELD -- Canfield High running back Angelo Babbaro thought of a couple of reasons for the Cardinals' impressive 49-35 victory over Chaney.
"The game was on TV," said the 5-foot-9 senior, "and we haven't beaten Chaney in nine years."
Babbaro helped lead an awesome offensive attack by scoring 4 touchdowns on runs of 67, 36 and 35 yards and on a 67-yard reception as the Cardinals opened up a 49-7 lead early in the third quarter.
Babbaro finished with 183 yards rushing on just 11 carries and contributed 250 yards of total offense.
"Overall that was the best half of football we played all year," said Canfield coach Mike Pavlansky. "It feels good to get a quality win against a program like Chaney."
Chaney didn't quit
Canfield (4-0) played their second units after opening up the 42-point lead, but Chaney wasn't about to play out the game without a strong effort down the stretch.
Chaney (1-2) scored 28 points in the second half behind the arm of quarterback Antwan Rice and receivers Kory Jackson and Victor Toney. The late surge forced Canfield to put its first unit back in the game for a couple of series late in the game.
"We're gonna play the game to the end," said Chaney coach Ron Berdis. "I give our kids credit for hanging in there but it was way too much Canfield and not enough Chaney tonight.
"We're not as bad as we looked but I'm hoping that Canfield is one of the best teams in the area."
Canfield used all weapons
Canfield had more weapons than just Babbaro and the Cardinals used them all in the first half.
Babbaro got the Cardinals rolling on their second possession when he burst through the middle and raced 67 yards for a touchdown.
"I was a little surprised how open the middle was," Babbaro said. "But our line does such a good job that there was all kind of daylight out there."
After Chaney tied the score on a Rice to Jackson 10-yard scoring play, Babbaro responded with another 36-yard touchdown right up the middle again and the Cardinals never looked back.
Canfield scored 29 points in the second quarter, all in spectacular fashion.
Fullback Kyle Banna raced off tackle 55 yards while Babbaro scored minutes later on a 35-yard run.
The final two scores came on a 22-yard fumble return by Damon Buente and a 5-yard run by Joe Rosko.
Babbaro catches TD pass
Babbaro sealed the win by taking a swing pass on Canfield's first series in the second half and racing past Chaney defenders for a 67-yard score.
"Angelo's worked extremely hard in the off-season to get stronger," Pavlansky said. "He has great speed and field vision which makes him a threat every time but he'll tell you it starts up front with the offensive line."
Chaney rallied by scoring on a 1-yard run by Robert McElroy in the third quarter and scoring 3 times in the final period.
Jackson caught his second touchdown pass for 65 yards. The senior had 10 catches for 229 yards to lead the Cowboys.
Terrell Tomlin scored the final two touchdown on a 2-yard run and an 11-yard touchdown reception.
