Group will look at interested handler-animal teams

YOUNGSTOWN -- K-9's for Compassion will evaluate human-animal teams interested in joining the group from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 1 and 2 at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Each handler and animal must pass a 19-step evaluation, for which appointments are necessary. The evaluation will include basic obedience and aptitude. Any animal, except wildlife and exotics, may be considered. All handlers are tested according to Delta Society standards.
Those interested in the evaluation may call (330) 534-2001 and leave a message with name, address and phone number. Packets of information will be mailed. Appointments will be made.
K-9's for Compassion, a therapy animal group, visits area hospitals and nursing homes. The group also is a part of Hubbard Library's "Paws to Read" program in which children read to dogs.
The organization, founded by Katie Costello in the spring of 2000, began with an original 12 members. Today, 55 animals are involved. Because of the great number of requests to the organization, more volunteers are needed.
