Drug arrest at school
HUBBARD -- City police arrested a 16-year-old Hubbard High School student Friday at the school on an outstanding warrant for drug trafficking. Police said ecstasy and marijuana were bought from the boy over a six-month period. The boy is charged with felony trafficking in marijuana and felony trafficking in ecstasy. Police said no sales were made on Hubbard school property. They would not release his name.
Lake Milton sewers
LAKE MILTON -- A meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the American Legion hall on Milton Avenue will address the Lake Milton water and sewer project.
An update will be given on funding. Representatives expected to attend include the Mahoning County commissioners and sanitary engineer's offices, Congressman Ted Strickland, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Lake Milton trustees, Craig Beach mayor, Lake Milton utilities committee and the Lake Milton Association.
Seeking to pull bond
YOUNGSTOWN -- Prosecutors have asked a Mahoning County Common Pleas judge to revoke a $100,000 bond for a man out on an aggravated robbery charge who now has been arrested on an attempted murder charge.
Antwan Lanier, 22, of East Midlothian Boulevard, was released on the bond April 12.
Last week, police used tear gas to drive Lanier from an East Side house to arrest him on warrants charging him with a July 27 attempted murder and aggravated robbery. Prosecutors said the arrest violates conditions of the bond. Judge Jack Durkin has not ruled on the request, which was filed Friday.
Waste policy board
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield Township trustees announced that Dr. Joe Edwards of Springfield Township has been appointed to the Mahoning County Solid Waste Policy Board. Trustees have been trying to get Edwards appointed to the board for some time. They think the township should have a resident on the board because Waste Management has a landfill in the township.
Proposal-writing basics
YOUNGSTOWN -- "Proposal Writing Basics" presented by William Kirker, CFRE, director of development at St. Paul Homes in Greenville, Pa., will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Main Library. This program is intended for representatives of nonprofit organizations new to the proposal-writing process, and will provide an introductory overview of the process. Woman reports rape
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 18-year-old Hudson Avenue woman told police she was raped in a yard on the South Side by a man who dragged her off Hillman Street around 11 p.m. Thursday. The woman said had just left a store and was walking home when the suspect, who identified himself as Donald, asked if he could walk along and she agreed. The woman said the man grabbed her neck, punched her in the head and dragged her down West Boston Avenue to an abandoned house and raped her.
White amur orders
CORTLAND -- The Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District is taking orders through Sept. 23 for white amurs, also known as grass carp, a fish used for pond vegetation control. Conservation officials note the preferred food of white amur is leafy, rooted aquatic plants such as pondweed and coontail, so the fish are not recommended as control for green algae.
To request an order form or for more information, call the conservation district office at (330) 637-2056, extension 3. Cost is $11 per fish. The fish will be available for pickup at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Mosquito Lake parking area off West Main Street.
Scrap tire collection
WARREN -- A scrap tire collection will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdayat the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District, 5138 Enterprise Blvd. Tires will be accepted on or off the rims and a handling fee charged for tractor-trailer or agricultural vehicle tires.
Candidacy announced
SHARON, Pa. -- Mark Longietti, 41, of Farrell, has announced his candidacy for state representative in Pennsylvania's 7th District. He will seek the Democratic nomination in May, taking on incumbent Democrat Mike Gruitza. Longietti has been an attorney for the past 16 years in Sharon. He graduated from Sharpsville High School, Westminster College and Boston College Law School.
