Checks on car seats to be offered at State Farm

BOARDMAN -- Certified child passenger safety technicians will check your child's car seat at the State Farm Service Center, 1499 Boardman-Canfield Road, from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Those who want to participate should call (330) 884-4031 to schedule an appointment.
This event is sponsored by State Farm Insurance in partnership with the Mahoning Valley SAFE KIDS Coalition and the Ohio Buckle Buckeyes Program, Region 4.
Common mistakes
About 90 percent of child restraints are misused, the coalition says.
The three most common misuses:
UThe harness is not tight enough, making it possible that the child will be ejected from the car seat in the event of a crash.
UThe harness clip is not used properly, making it possible that the child will be ejected from the car seat in the event of a crash.
UThe car seat is installed in the vehicle too loosely, making it possible that the seat will be ejected from the vehicle in the event of a crash.
Children between 4 to 8 are frequently riding at particular risk. They have outgrown their toddler car seats and are buckled with a safety belt alone. Children in this age group, should be evaluated to determine whether a booster seat is needed.
