Campbell mayoral candidate dies

CAMPBELL -- Frank D. Tofil, write-in candidate for mayor in the city's primary election Sept. 27, died between 7 and 8 a.m. Wednesday while putting a campaign sign along Struthers-Liberty Road at McCartney Road.
Tofil, of 588 Tenney Ave., was 50. The results of an autopsy by the Mahoning County coroner's office to determine the cause of death were not available Wednesday.
Mayor John E. Dill, one of Tofil's opponents in the election, called Tofil's death tragic. "I just hate to see this."
According to his candidate r & eacute;sum & eacute;, Tofil graduated from Campbell Memorial High School in 1973, and also studied to become an electrical technician at the New Castle School of Trades. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Campbell City Council eight years ago.
Tofil helped to start the Campbell Girls Ponytail Baseball League, was co-founder of the Campbell Dart League, and was past president of the Slovak Club.
On his candidates form, Tofil said his goal was to make Campbell the way it was when he was growing up. He said some of his priorities were road repair, traffic lights and enforcing curfews.
"I believe people do not mind paying taxes when they are seeing results," he said.
He leaves his wife, the former Lora Mihalik, three daughters, three grandchildren and his mother, the former Julia Essenyi.
