Director Jim Petuch announced the department will conduct a "Dump and Run" event from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 8 at the Lake Milton State Park Picnic Area. The event is modeled on a similar program at Youngstown State University where residential students leave their unwanted belongings at the end of the year to be reused or recycled. Lake Milton residents can bring workable and usable items to the site. The items will be collected and donated to the Mission of Love organization, based in Austintown, and to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
Deputy sheriffs in charge of investigating illegal dumping reported that between Aug. 14 and Saturday they received nine complaints from within the city and 14 scattered elsewhere around the county. People in 13 cases complied with the deputies, and 14 cases were unfounded. The deputies issued 11 oral warnings and nine written warnings to trucking companies. They issued six tickets: three for unsecured loads, two for illegal dumping (one in Youngstown and one in Canfield) and one for littering.
Committee members expressed displeasure with a curt e-mail allegedly circulated statewide by the county's former recycling division director, Tim Berlekamp. Petuch recently sent an e-mail notice to recycling colleagues statewide regarding today's symposium at YSU on the possibility of building a Materials Recovery Facility in the region. Petuch said the e-mail was recirculated by Berlekamp, who now works for the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio. The reply e-mail read "What a joke." Petuch called the response inappropriate and disrespectful. Petuch notified the director of the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio about the correspondence, and the county is seeking a response, Petuch said. Robert Carcelli, chairman of the MRF committee, called the comment "slanderous" and said the committee is seeking legal advice on what can be done.
