New school levy will be on ballot next year, board president says

CORTLAND -- Michael Rantilla, Lakeview school board president, announced that there won't be another levy try for the school district until next year.
Levy plans will be decided after a tax settlement evaluation in January, he said. The levy has failed in the past five elections.
Board member Larry Swiger said at Monday's board meeting that Lakeview students still have the same quality of education now, but in the future cuts will be made.
Rantilla will appoint a finance committee next month in order to examine budget spending and ways to cut costs. Ultimately, he added, the levy will be needed to keep the school system operating.
In other business, the board recognized senior Laura Nochta for her rating in the top 100 high school girl golfers in the country.
The board also recognized Jenny Hitmar for the scenic mural she designed in the high school auditorium. Hitmar is a 1996 Lakeview High graduate. The mural is 40 feet wide and 14 feet high. Hitmar paints professionally at the Cleveland Playhouse.
The board awarded a bread contract to Nickles Bakery and a milk contract to the Dean Dairy Products Co.
Board member Donald Moore said he wants to look into starting an alumni association for the schools.
