Phantoms dropseason opener
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Patrick Kane scored twice and Blake Geoffrion added three assists Friday to lead the U.S. National Under-18 team to a 5-3 win over the Mahoning Valley Phantoms to kick off the 2005-06 North American Hockey League (NAHL) season.
The Under-18 Team, who return 20 players from last year's Under-17 Team, outshot the Phantoms 19-4 in the opening period, but the Phantoms took the lead as Anthony Ciraulo scored on assists by Marc Menzione and Drew Satterley at the 6:42 mark.
Kane evened the score on a two-on-one break. Phantoms goaltender Ryan Zapolski anticipated a pass, but Kane's wrist shot bounced off Zapolski's left skate and into the goal at 8:53.
The Phantoms caught a big break on the power play. During a line change, defenseman Drew Fortney's dump in off the left wing glass hit a partition that stabilizes the glass. The puck ricocheted off the partition into the open net as U.S. goaltender Joe Palmer was behind his goal ready to play the dump-in pass.
The U.S. tied the game when Geoffrion fed Tony Mosey along the left wing, who then went cross ice to a streaking Rhett Rakhshani. Rakhshani's wrist shot tied the game at 2-2.
In the second period, Kane took advantage of the Phantoms pinching in by outskating a defenseman and lifting a wristshot over Zapolski's blocker.
Menzione tied the game at 3-3 but Michael Ratchuk knocked in a loose puck with 5:39 remaining to give the U.S. the lead for good at 4-3. Bill Sweatt added an empty net goal.
The U.S. outshot the Phantoms, 39-22. Zapolski made 32 saves.
