Black Knights to present awards

Public invited to participate in association's major fund-raising event.
HUBBARD -- In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the Black Knights Police Association, a nonprofit organization, will host an annual Awards Banquet Oct. 1 at the Brentford House, 737 Myron St.
The theme for this year's event is "Thirty Years of Maintaining a Sense of Dignity and Respect."
The following individuals will be honored:
UCommunity Service Award -- Frankie Halfacre, music director and disc jockey with 102 JAMZ; Ode Aduma, community affairs director with WKBN TV-27; and Carl Bryant, retired PSA director with WFMJ TV-21.
UHumanitarian Award -- The Rev. Elizabeth Powell of World Fellowship Interdenominational Church.
U Criminal Justice Award -- Judge Theresa Dellick.
The speaker for the anniversary dinner and celebration will be Youngstown native and former federal Judge Nathaniel Jones.
The anniversary dinner is the major fund-raiser of the Black Knights. The community can support the organization by purchasing tickets for the dinner or ads to be printed in the ad book.

Background
The Black Knights Police Association was founded and chartered by the State of Ohio in 1975. The association has provided food baskets for the needy during holidays and worked with the Black Nurses Association on medical projects such as bone marrow screening and blood pressure screening. It has worked with black political leaders in getting people out to vote and is involved in the political process in Youngstown. The headquarters of the association is a voting precinct.
The association has also worked with youths, sponsoring drill teams, softball teams, inner city soccer, modeling etiquette classes, summer youth programs and has helped fund scholarships. In addition, it has been involved in community projects such as National Night Out and the Gleaners food giveaway and has worked with block watches and local churches on several projects.
